I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Ability to make a difference in productivity of financial advisors. Fairly independent. Challenging

    Cons

Unreasonable number of "quasi" managers to whom reporting is required Role may not be embraced or understood by some members upper management Ridiculous number of conference calls Highly dependent on internal partner which can be good or bad Unreasonable compensation for the amount of work required Culture that is highly regimented Culture is one that breeds leaders with self-serving interests

    Advice to Management

Some senior managers/executives need to learn a rule that is often taught to children - treat others with respect.

    Pros

Good people, high energy firm. They do good work that benefits America.

    Cons

Leadership treats the employees, advisors, and clients as resources to be managed to the benefit of the shareholder, much the same way that your would treat office furniture. They play too fast and too loose with people's careers, laying them off with little forethought and little reason.

    Advice to Management

There is a war for talent that's beginning to take place, treat people with respect and dignity and perhaps you will retain some of the best and brightest.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

A financially conservative company that strives to find new ways to improve the customer experience. The comp is good, nice time off policies, and gym.

    Cons

Cyclical model of hiring and layoffs. Just like clock work every three to five years there is an aggressive push to lower costs and it is done through layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Teach leaders to manage costs as part of their process.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Salary ranges are competitive and the downtown Minneapolis location, while not in the core of downtown, is attractive for many.

    Cons

Wow. Where to start. The vulture is one of micro-management, passive aggressive leadership and lack of decision-making, empowement or trust. They may talk a good game but the experience of employees at all levels is demoralizing. Employees are not encouaged to take risks, be creative or collaborate. Managers -- they call them leaders -- are selected and promoted based on results only , not people skils, mentoring, coaching...

    Advice to Management

Replace managers at all levels - it's broken and employees are too scared to honestly address the poor culture.

    Pros

Stock price is main focus. By knowing this, as an employee, it makes it easier to understand how decisions are made that may seem disconnected.

    Cons

Work across departments is not easy due to the lack of sofisticated technologies supporting remote meetings. Using a phone for most communications is not the best way to create a team environment. The Technology team out of Minneapolis has some very smart people but have a hard time managing younger staff memebers.

    Advice to Management

Invest in more colaborative tools and recommend that the Technology teams take advantage of this service.

I have been working at Ameriprise

    Pros

Having a job/$ during harsh economy; good place to start a career; very diverse-centric environment; convenient downtown Limmeapolis location

    Cons

Communication from top levels dow is nearly non-existent; lack of pride in organization; too many inefficiencies in outsourced jobs; a mumber of "lifer" employees who bring minimal value to the workplace; as with all financial services companies AMP is struggling to keep stocckholders happy so employees end up a distant second; employee morale is at an all-time low; too many out-of-towners running the show when what is...

    Disapproves of CEO

    I worked at Ameriprise

    Pros

Good insight into what it's like to work in corporate hell - BS meetings, ridiculous "fire drills," leaders that suck the life out of you, policies that pertain only to some, favoritism, and no reward for hard work.

    Cons

Poor integrity, weak leadership, compromised principles, and no value of you personally whatsoever.

    Advice to Management

Care about people. Treat them right. They ARE your company.

    Pros

Work - Life balance at least in the corporate head office. As an advisor you essentially run your own business so you choose how hard to work.

    Cons

Not performance oriented enough. The work culture is not competitive and things take forever to get done.

    Advice to Management

Raise salaries and demand results from the people you have rather than adding more and more staff/ contractors. For example - Most internal PM's I know, do no work. They just attend meetings and manage contractors, who actually do the work.

I have been working at Ameriprise

    Pros

Culture We have a corporate culture that emphasizes leadership. Even if you are not managing a team, you are still considered a leader and are judged on how you handle yourself. If you are a leader, developing your people is considered an important part of your job. I also like that you rarely hear the words manager or boss - it is always leader which I think emphasizes the perspective that the company takes. ...

    Cons

Culture While leadership is emphasized, it sometimes difficult because you are expected to develop you people (which I agree with) but also get the work done. A lot of the time, work getting done "wins" over people development. It isn't that it doesn't happen or it can't be done, it is just a difficult balance. We are a bit meeting heavy here. It seems like we can be in meetings for 3/4 of the day and then have...
