I worked at Ameriprise full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Built great relationships with coworkers.
They believe in team building outings and events.
Benefits are better than average versus other financial firms.

    Cons

    Constantly changing compensation plan.
Adheres to an eat what you kill mantra, but not an eat what you kill pay plan.
You do not own your book, they become house clients after close.

    Advice to Management

AMP is one of the best firms to start your financial career. The training plan is excellent and they really want you to succeed. So why the two stars? After you get your feet wet, that is where the advantages stop. The culture, compensation and career path is set up in such a way that you cannot grow. You are not building something tangible long term as you do not get to keep trails, residuals or clients. In essence it creates an artificial timeframe where after two years, you have reached the pinnacle of what you can learn and are forced to ply your trade with another firm. That is why other firms love seeing AMP on your resume as they know that you were trained properly. Unfortunately AMP creates their own competition because anyone with any good sense or skill soon leaves to greener pastures. I don't understand the strategy around spending tens of thousands of dollars training people just to see them walk out the door. AMP originally had the secret recipe to succeed before completely gutting their compensation plan at the behest of a well known east coast consulting firm that thought pinching a penny while letting dollars slip away was a viable strategy.

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time

    Pros

When working with motivated advisors, making more money comes easier and the work is fulfilling. The company matches up to 5% plus opens an additional pension account at 2.5% after the first year of employment

    Cons

I feel like there are very few opportunities to move upwards. It can be difficult when working with an advisor that you might not mesh with or who doesn't want to compensate that there aren't really any opportunities to have control over who you assist.

I worked at Ameriprise full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for. Excellent benefits, compensation plans and strategic vision. Senior leadership team is very smart and tends to never make a bad move

    Cons

Ameriprise is a very conservative east coast mentality type company so there is little to no flexibilty

I have been working at Ameriprise full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The salaries are fair and the benefits are on par with the market.

    Cons

There is limited upward career potential. There is still a very strong old boys network. A lot of sexism and double standards for women. Unethical pay for the CEO.

    Advice to Management

    Share the wealth.
