Company Only Focus is Funneling Money to Executives

    Pros

    Good work and life balance

    Cons

Try googling "ameriprise employee 401k lawsuit" and that will tell you all you need to know about how this company treats their employees. A company whose business is to manage people's lifesavings tried to cheat their own employees on their life savings to marginally pad the pockets of the executive leadership team. They constantly look for ways to nickel and dime their employees so they can marginally increase executive compensation. Management at all levels boast that they pay less than all of their competitors. If you ask to be paid even close to what Ameriprise themselves say is the competitive pay for your position, they will not only decline, but will ridicule you for asking. The CEO was named the most overpaid CEO in the world by Business Journal, and had his compensation voted down by shareholders in non-binding votes. When Ameriprise received the largest corporate tax cut in US history, they froze their employee pension plan, added a surcharge to the health insurance plan for employees' family members, and then instituted $10 billion in share buybacks to enrich the executive leadership team. All of my accomplishments were kept secret from upper management. Upper management is completely unaware of the risks associated with certain lines of business and which employees are mitigating those risks. Lower management will not share that an employee saved the company from multiple billion dollar disasters because it would make them look bad that there is even that risk, which results in that employee never being rewarded or recognized for extraordinary company-saving accomplishments. Middle-management is lazy, and in many cases, completely useless. Most are Ameriprise lifers who have no idea how typical businesses are managed. Some managers don't have the basic knowledge of what their employees do to be able to give relevant performance reviews. Regardless of performance, talent, or skills, it's easy to get stuck in a job that Ameriprise will want to keep you trapped in the rest of your life. Even on my way out, the company tried to short me on my accrued vacation payout, thinking I wouldn't notice.

Ameriprise has opportunities for improvement, but overall I would recommend it.

    Pros

The benefits and bonuses are good. The work / life balance is one of the best amongst the companies I've worked for. Amerprise is extremely flexible with my hours and schedule.

    Cons

Communication could be better. Opportunities for advancement are few and far between. The company should allow more opportunites to work from home.

    Not forward thinking

    Jan 13, 2022 - Senior Manager

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Lots of room to move up.

    Cons

This company is not forward thinking. One of the things we usual talk about is to be forward thinking. This company lives in the past when it comes to coming into the office and work life balance. They do not trust their employees to work remotely all the time to account for work life balance and retaining employees long term.

    Pros

Diverse talent, competitive wages, comprehensive benefits package, professional atmosphere, room for growth and development, client focused and strong community relations.

    Cons

Work life balance can be a challenge when the change agenda for the organization is large. A lot of departments seem understaffed which makes a lot of work bottleneck and requires employees, even exempt associates to put in a lot of extra hours per week and on the weekends to manage the workload.

    Plenty of opportunity and challenges

Dec 3, 2022 - Audit Manager in Minneapolis, MN

    Pros

I worked at a Big Four firm for some time and moved to a non-profit. I knew that I needed a work life balance and wouldn't go back to a Big Four environment for any level of pay. I moved from the non-profit to Ameriprise and have been really happy with what I view as the best of both worlds. I've had great opportunities to advance my career at Ameriprise while still having a good balance (I average 40-43 hours a week). I certainly feel like my work is challenging and that I'm continuing to grow and hone my skills. I was also surprised at the availably of senior leaders and easily set up a mentor relationship with a SVP out site my department.

    Cons

I have several colleagues that work at the big banks in this metro area who earn more but average many more hours, often 55 hours per week. I would not trade places.
