I worked at Amgen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Incredible benefits, great working environment (Thousand Oaks), extremely smart colleagues, very good pay package, lots of random perks, room to move and grow if you have the right skills.

    Cons

Ponderous systems and procedures to master, moves at a snails pace (IT), low tolerance for risk(IT), outsources many roles (especially IT), corporate IT structure is highly decentralized so work experiences can be vastly different across the organization, jumping on the open-office bandwagon but may be a poor fit for Amgen's culture, depending on your philosophical outlook you might take issue with the for-profit business model that charges obscene prices for life-saving drugs.

    Advice to Management

Trust the expertise of the people you hire.

I worked at Amgen as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and the campus in Thousand Oaks is amazing!

    Cons

Management leaves something to be desired. You are basically half trained and left on your own to figure it all out. They've been reorganizing the company and their systems for over 2 years now but still can't seem to get it right. If you love constant change and no training/management, then you'll love this company.

I worked at Amgen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent basic benefits package, and fringe benefits for upper management, which is an exceptional way to promote an strategic and effective retention strategy.

    Cons

Moving more and more to outdated "old big pharmacy" culture does not help to retain the best people, creating unnecessary pressure and stress, which is going backwards on today's job trends.

    Advice to Management

Your employees are your best resource; stick with them 100%

    I worked at Amgen full-time

    Pros

-Benefits are fantastic and salaries are very competitive.
    -Beautiful main campus.

    Cons

-Upper management isn't listening to those executing their strategies enough. They seem to listen at about the Executive Director level and up, but the majority of strategy and operations are carried out and implemented by staff below that level.
-Despite trying to innovatively strategize at an executive level, the culture is still very rigid and unadapting to change and thinking outside the box.
    - Staff are not given enough opportunities for growth and are overworked.

    Advice to Management

Consult more with those actually implementing your strategies and operations before actualizing new/changing strategies that will cost the company money or jobs. Don't discount the unique and practical insight of those at more junior levels.
