    Pros

-Awesome events for interns throughout summer
    -Great people
    -Interesting and applicable project
    -Work/life balance
    -Small group interactions with executives
    -Teamwork
    -Excellent case study

    Cons

-Difficult vernacular. Understanding the science is extremely difficult
-Large company, limited exposure to the business

    Advice to Management

A few more performance reviews would take the guesswork out of how the interns are doing and alleviate the pressure off of a final presentation.

    Pros

I work on products that are saving lives every day. My management promotes and supports continuous development on and off the job. I work with other smart people to solve the some of the most important and challenging problems in our society.

    Cons

Amgen is a grew from a small biotech into a large company that still has not developed all of the right systems. Regulatory and human safety requirements impose constraints and create difficulties that are unimaginable in many other industries. We sell our products in a complex operating environment with new competitors, legal issues, ethical challenges, and risky science. These operating challenges make the most simple tasks difficult.

    Advice to Management

Communicate key priorities frequently and clearly, then eliminate activities that do not support these priorities.

    Pros

Great benefits and reasonable salary. Everyone that works there is highly competent, and the job you are doing really makes a difference.

    Cons

Amgen is currently going through financial difficulties and it shows. I had worked as an intern one year and have since been unable to obtain an additional internship despite good recommendations and a seemingly good interview process. HR has been thoroughly downsized and they never seem to know what is going on with their internship program.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to cut back the company for the sake of profit for share holders.

    Pros

Decent benefits despite cutbacks. Overall work-life balance is great. Compensation is above average. Many opportunities to expand knowledge and growth. If you want to learn how to do things right the first time, it's a good place to be.

    Cons

Career-wise, mobility (vertical, horizontal) is limited. Current events have had a significant negative impact to business and organizational practice in the company. This has impact on morale, job satisfaction, more interoffice gossip/politics and job security.

    Advice to Management

I'm not sure, until there's a viable product in the pipeline to replace drugs currently under negative review, the company has done as much as it possibly can.

    Pros

The benefits are really amazing; from the 3 weeks starting vacation to the 15+ days of company holiday and 10 "family days". The 401K mathing is really great. Remember if you are lucky enough to work here, this was a Top Employer a few years ago.. the benefits have not changed. If you are willing to see it, there is a very upside to working for a pharma company, you are truly working to make product to help people (yes there is a profit in there also), but we don't make baby soap, we help people in need.

    Cons

The companies future is very uncertain right now. In reality however, its a very profitable company. Many of the senior management are from the windfall days and never learned to make good decisions; at times priorities waffle and hard decisions are hard to achieve.

    Advice to Management

    Learn to make decisions.

    Pros

Benefits & long-term opportunity. One of the biggest and still most stable names in biotechnology. Outstanding benefits, especially bonuses, 401k, and generous tuition reimbursement. Brilliant co-workers and collaborative environment. Solid drug pipeline. Products have significant impact and it is thoroughly satisfying to be contributing to what the company is accomplishing. Extensive track record of dramatically improving thousands of lives in an array of disease categories.

    Cons

Current uncertainty in ESA franchise, few promotion opportunities available until stability returns (though every other form of career advancement is available). Significant job nesting.

    Advice to Management

Further improve government and public relations - how can our image be this tarnished after having dramatically improved so many lives?

    Pros

Superior products; quality of staff; benefits; work/life policies; home purchase assistance (which is truly outstanding); overall relocaton policy; company facilities/office areas; Amgen gym; on-site child care; tuition assistance; Amgen summerfest (family day); corporate giving (matching donations); work hours; on-site gift shops; on-site car wash; on-site farmers market. Amgen cares about it's staff and supports open communication. When Amgen went through restructuring in 2007, they were very open to staff regarding what issues the company was facing and how the company planned to get the company back on track. I appreciated knowing what was coming.

    Cons

Cost of living in surrounding community; stock has not performed well in the past 2 years, however that is all about to change.

    Advice to Management

Kevin, never doubt your leadership of Amgen. I personally think you are have been doing an outstanding job during these difficult times we just went through. It would be good if you could slide back your window screens so staff can tell that you are in your office. Keep doing what you are doing....reward staff, never let your key employees wonder where they stand with the company. Also, thank you for the 2 holiday shutdown's, flextime, and all of the great benefits.

    Pros

A very ethical company that tries hard to target grevious illness when developing therapies. I got a very meaty summer project and full access to everyone at the company. People were open and friendly and very willing to help out someone with virtually no science background. Great experience.

    Cons

It's located in Thousand Oaks, CA. It is a very data driven company and used to building consensus before moving forward on decisions. Occasionally there is a bit of information overload and you spend a lot of time vetting all your ideas/projects through other people.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes everyone is so nice in meetings, that underlying issues aren't addressed. It wouldn't be bad to encourage a bit of "devil's advocate" aspects to the discussion.

    Pros

alot of pay and some good science. there are lots of smart people to bounce ideas off of and do good independent and collaborative research. hard work is often but not always rewarded.

    Cons

besides management not listening to employees, there are alot of politics that need to be navigated. you can work as hard as anyone and be the smartest guy in the world and it will only get you about half way in this company.

    Advice to Management

listen to those below you. even though they are new, they are in the trenches day in and day out doing the dirty work.
