I worked at Amgen as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you are passionate about biopharma, THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE! You have so many resources and experts to learn from, I felt like I should have been given a degree in biotech upon completion of the internship.

Everyone is very supportive of interns, regardless of their title. I was able to chat with everyone from managers to SVP level.

Very structured MBA internship programs. They've been doing this for a long time and it shows. Many current employees who went through the internship and are available for support. Amazing events during the summer for professional and personal growth.

Actually got a project with real business implication to work on! Challenging at times, but if you are looking for an easy summer, this isn't the place for you.

Interns have access to everything a FTE would, such as the on-campus gym, Next Gen Workspaces, and conference rooms. In some cases, I had more access than some of the employees and contingent workers.

Housing for MBA interns and some undergrads is also provided.

    Cons

Be expected to eat, breathe, and sweat Amgen. Very immersive environment, which has its pros and cons

Location. Thousand Oaks is not the most vibrant city, but very close to Malibu and about 1 hour to LA and Santa Monica

    Advice to Management

Retain younger talent by providing housing stipends like Genentech does

I have been working at Amgen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent company. Smart people. Great to work for a company that's creating human therapeutics to help improve lives. Cutting-edge campus. Great pay / bonus, excellent 401K match. Christmas week shutdown and 4th of July shutdown time off, in addition to vacation.

    Cons

Biotech is a volatile industry. Company constantly changing to remain competitive. Since joining, I've continually looked over my shoulder with frequent org changes / layoffs. Non-core business functions (i.e. back office support, etc.), these roles are not always given the priority that's given to the science side, which is understandable. Can be difficult to find other internal roles, as it can be challenging to get noticed within such a big organization.

I have been working at Amgen as an intern

    Pros

Helpful environment, even with organizational changes creating tough time, they helped me get into projects of my focus. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Communication between team members as most of them are off-site.

    Advice to Management

Focus on getting your employees into a central work zone (especially time zone)

I have been working at Amgen as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of things to learn, great and professional co-workers, ethical environment

    Cons

Lots of contracts and not a lot of open full time opportunities (rarely Engineer -level 4 )

    Advice to Management

Retain talent contractors and don't loose them after they have been trained and skillful after couple of years of hard work ... Not efficient to keep starting the cycle of training new engineers and loose them, problems occur from these cycles (i.e information gets lost)

I have been working at Amgen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Fantastic place to work; at a transformational inflection point transitioning from old-Amgen (highly successful, little competition, hierarchical) to new-Amgen (highly successful, increasing competition, agile/nimble/informal).

    Cons

Still has more than desirable share of old-Amgen mind-set (e.g., hierarchical).

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing and as possible accelerate transition to new-Amgen (highly successful, increasing competition, agile/nimble/informal).

I have been working at Amgen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very good place to work, great benefits, gym etc. enjoy the campus with few basketball courts, and soccer field.

    Cons

Growth within the Organization is hard as too many are at same level, more emphasis on cost cutting lately, I guess it has become industry norm

    Advice to Management

    Communication

I have been working at Amgen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work life balance, benefits, great colleagues

    Cons

Cost cutting over the last few years has reduced the attractiveness of the benefits. Difficult to get promoted even as a top performer.

    I worked at Amgen full-time

    Pros

Benefit package among the best in the industry. Company hires very smart people in general who are committed to the science. Strong focus on the patient and serious illnesses.

    Cons

You're on the clock all the time. There are too few titles so you feel as if you are not advancing. Some inequities of titles and compensation between organizations.
