I have been working at Amgen as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of things to learn, great and professional co-workers, ethical environment

    Cons

Lots of contracts and not a lot of open full time opportunities (rarely Engineer -level 4 )

    Advice to Management

Retain talent contractors and don't loose them after they have been trained and skillful after couple of years of hard work ... Not efficient to keep starting the cycle of training new engineers and loose them, problems occur from these cycles (i.e information gets lost)

I have been working at Amgen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Fantastic place to work; at a transformational inflection point transitioning from old-Amgen (highly successful, little competition, hierarchical) to new-Amgen (highly successful, increasing competition, agile/nimble/informal).

    Cons

Still has more than desirable share of old-Amgen mind-set (e.g., hierarchical).

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing and as possible accelerate transition to new-Amgen (highly successful, increasing competition, agile/nimble/informal).

I worked at Amgen as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The company figured out how to thrive while selling life-saving drugs at exorbitant prices that the average patient can't afford unless they finance it through the insurance racket and a $20 trillion debt laden America.

    Cons

    - This company is following the "Next-Gen" trend of getting rid of their own desks for workers and forcing them to work in closets or public areas where they are forced to listen to grown ups flirting and talk about whatever putrid ideas surface onto their brains.
    - The entire IT staff is from India so you'll be competing with guys that will work for next to nothing to get a green card.
    - IS department is so disorganized that you will go weeks after getting hired without getting badges that work, laptops, and the services you need to do your job.
    - Contract workers have to park in a distant parking lot because they are made to be reminded daily that they are not part of the company.

    Advice to Management

Enjoy the gravy train while it lasts because the health insurance industry will implode.

    Pros

Very good place to work, great benefits, gym etc. enjoy the campus with few basketball courts, and soccer field.

    Cons

Growth within the Organization is hard as too many are at same level, more emphasis on cost cutting lately, I guess it has become industry norm

    Advice to Management

    Communication

    Pros

    Cons

Cost cutting over the last few years has reduced the attractiveness of the benefits. Difficult to get promoted even as a top performer.

I worked at Amgen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, great benefits, good pay.

    Cons

Extremely unstable. I have seen so many good people get laid off just for the sake of restructuring and then Amgen hires similar people back.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the people who you have hired and trained. You hire the best of the best and then bring them to Thousand Oaks only to lay them off or make people concerned that they will be laid off. Stop with the constant restructuring.

Not too many opportunities for contract workers to become permanent employees. Limited parking for contract workers.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

Benefit package among the best in the industry. Company hires very smart people in general who are committed to the science. Strong focus on the patient and serious illnesses.

    Cons

You're on the clock all the time. There are too few titles so you feel as if you are not advancing. Some inequities of titles and compensation between organizations.
