      Three Companies, One Name

      Pros

There are many nice people on the development teams who sincerely want to work with teachers to make technology work for them.

      Cons

Senior management is terrible at communicating company goals and syncing up the three divisions. It is quite common that employees in one division have no idea what is going on in the other two. The best we get is a company-wide blast PR email linking to media coverage after product announcements. The last several all-company meetings have largely been ego strokefests where the executives show off that they know famous people. Those of us that actually build the products don't care if you know the guy who co-wrote Game Change. Implementing great user interfaces is given low priority. There is a real dearth of front-end development specialists. Too much capital-A Agile process, not enough agility. In my case, several years without a raise despite consistently high-quality work and skill growth (under my own initiative).

Badly-Handled Management Re-Org Scaring Everyone Away

      Pros

I think your day-to-day experience at Amplify depends heavily on which team you work with. As for me, I find my coworkers engaged and intelligent; they're all good and interesting people. The work we're doing does have a social impact, so it's nice not to go home at the end of the day having built yet another silly app or website.

      Cons

I've been at Amplify for about two years, and I feel like things are up and down. When I came onboard, things were down: morale was low and turnover was high. Then they hired a new CEO for our division. Things changed: management started listening to employees again. There were snacks in the kitchen, more events and clubs, they redesigned the office. It felt great -- but it only lasted about 8 or 9 months. Towards the beginning of the year management announced that we would be restructuring, from three divisions into one. Restructuring is never pleasant, and sometimes growing pains are necessary, but on the whole the transition has been handled badly. It feels as though employees don't matter again. So, morale is again sinking, and people are again starting to leave. Asking senior management questions is frustrating: they're more likely to tell you that whatever you asked about is important, but they won't tell you how they plan to achieve it or ensure that it comes about smoothly. Which is to say management seems entirely clueless and incompetent because they don't inspire a vision or detail an overall direction we're going in. If Amplify fails, it won't be because of the products or the market. It will be because of poor senior management.

      Could have been a contender

      Pros

Hired some really great, smart, proactive coworkers with a passion for the product. Amplify provided a very flexible work from home policy which was great for work/life balance. The office was large, bright, and located in a very desirable area.

      Cons

Pay was on the lower end of comparable positions elsewhere. Senior management promoted fiefdoms and cronyism resulted in isolated development teams and a lot of back-channel misinformation and backstabbing. Friends of senior management promoted to positions of authority, driving great employees out of the company. Decision makers routinely ignored teams until late into the product cycle, turning tasks that would have been easily solved early into emergency, all-hands-on-deck nightmares.

      Pros

The mission is commendable and many employees do seem to be passionate about the work that they are trying to do.

      Cons

Senior management is very dysfunctional. Turnover is extremely high. Work-life balance is not there. Ben & comp is low compared to other hi-tech companies.

Amplify: tremendous potential, almost matched by its disappointing downfall.

      Pros

Amazing colleagues (most of them anyway), good work life balance.

      Cons

Senior Management has the leadership qualities of a gerbil; decisions seem to be made with a dart board in a vacuum. Oh, and the nepotism and cronyism that hasn't been seen outside of the Finance Industry.
