Currently on an Amtrak in the quiet car (supposed to be library quiet and if complaints are made about a passenger, they are relocated). A woman chose to sit in this car with her incredibly noisy toddler when there are seats available in other cars. Woman keeps shushing her kid but isn’t putting any other effort into controlling or quieting them. AITA if I complain to the conductor?

      Pros

Great/ affordable medical benefits Exceptional pay Retirement and accrued vacation Paid training w/ no railroad experience required Really fun/interesting job!

      Cons

Federally/state funded= red tape, bureaucracy Union- not well represented, hard to fire bad apples Local management/ central operating bends rules as suits them Away from home constantly Federal "rest" only requires company to give 8 hours off between jobs On call for years to start (24/6, sometimes 7) No incentive for going above and beyond Local management will not listen to your ideas (though most of them have little experience in our shoes)

      Pros

Great pay, the best paying job you’ll find for minimal requirements Adventure, see cities and sites you’d never think to see in your life Benefits, Health is ok. Amazing support in coworkers

      Cons

Communication, this is Amtrak biggest issue feels like several different companies rather than a unified one Rift between the managers and OBS agents, some are oblivious to what OBS employers deal with and worst come to shove we endure their mistakes Away from home, this is the most contentious issue. You will be away from home a lot as most trips are 3-6 days long away from children loved ones and so on. People, you see the worst of people and best of people while on board. Do not go into this job already hating people as it will be a miserable experience

      Pros

Good pay and get to travel a bit. Most co-workers are fantastic and look after each other. Regular crews can take on that family feel.

      Cons

Lots of time away from home. Hourly pay is great but you only get paid for 65 hours and you’re away from home for 6 days. Management often times does not seem to have the employees best interest at heart. Long hours and wearing on the body.

      Pros

The pay rate allows me to have a job that actually pays a living wage. The atmosphere is very friendly and family orientated.

      Cons

The time you spend away from home can be a burden, but if you can stay prepared it can be worked out.
