    Pros

Engaging company, willing to take suggestions from others and incorporate them into operations. They generally encourage outside-the-box thinking, and, in IT, are willing to support new concepts and technologies.

    Cons

There is a strong sense of "Good 'ol Boys" club in their leadership dynamics. Many employees are past the 20 year mark which, while a testament to their retention, leans the leadership towards a closed circle that is difficult to join and near impossible to separate. Additionally, the company is hesitant to spend money on things that appear flashy or upscale for fear of negative customer or vendor reaction. This... is apparent in bare bones company vehicles bought used, facility quality, and visible technology.

    Advice to Management

There has to be some give and take in some of these areas. Saving money on facility type or location in some cases is good, but in others it compromises individual safety and functionality. Approaching each building as a benefit to the community at large may significantly improve this situation, depending on locations.

I have been working at Animal Health International full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Before they got too big this was a great place to work. The people were a pleasure to work with and you left there at the end of the day feeling like you did a good job.

    Cons

Steer clear from the Liberty, MO location unless you are prepared to move in and leave your life outside of work. Start time is 7am and quitting time is anywhere from 6pm to 11pm. You never feel like you are getting anything done because no matter what you do they just expect more. Not open to any ideas or suggestions. Too worried about unrealistic goals; KPI's.

    Advice to Management

Show your employees that they matter. Even a small amount of appreciation goes a long way. People have families and would like to see them in the evenings.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Animal Health International full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    My salary was ok.

    Cons

Shameless favoritism toward the less qualified and undeserving, as long as they play the game right. management is inept in their attempt to control their respective team morale. Management engages openly in gossip about their own staff. HR and I.T. have a terrifying, disproportionate amount of power over day to day functionality within position roles. Extreme intolerance of different value systems. A certain review... stated that you "get out what you put in", but I put in great care and consideration and was rewarded with discriminatory practices, a retaliatory gossip of a supervisor and no support.

    Advice to Management

Being that a legitimate company recently acquired you, I wish you well as you make the adjustment from bumbling closed door relationships to legitimate, regulated business practices. Try recognizing that each employee is an individual, and some of us aren't part of your cookie cutter majority. But I'm sure Patterson will be cleaning house anyway.

I have been working at Animal Health International full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Understanding of Family situations, am able to take off time I need.

    Cons

Seem shady about spiff bonuses, company doesn't always report what we sell correctly. Chain of command seems very extensive, and often have to jump through many hoops.

    Advice to Management

Be there as a liaison for your employees, not as someone that pushes back with everything we come to you about.

I worked at Animal Health International

    Pros

The Company WAS a good place to work. Autonomy, attainable goals, support. But, most of that is gone. Salary is slightly below avg, work minimal/no weekends.

    Cons

AHI is rooted in blue collar tradition but trying to be a big player. The two cultures clash & cause problems. Many people in mgmt are working hard to make jobs for themselves in instead of handing business. Senior mgmt is disillusioned at how local operations run. So, they take the bits & pieces & blow out of proportion to try to make local staff look bad. There is a lot of back room conniving & nothing reported... out of the local facilities is supported by Regional mgrs. Mgmt @ regional levels are competent but lack the ability to reach their objectives because they are too focused on interfering in local branches instead of supporting local branches. The company values are great, but regional managers hold local managers to a different standard than themselves or local staff. It's a pressure cooker painted with pretty colors.

    Advice to Management

Let local branch managers run their operations. Either be the Company from which it came OR cut all ties and be a people churn. Really, there's not much advice to give...it falls on deaf ears above the local teams. Really, the problems are in the regional ranks...not local, not executive.
