I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The best part about AMA is there are very few jerks. Generally it’s a very friendly, non competitive culture where people want to see each other succeed, and work as a team. Communication and team leadership are usually good, as people have been working together for a long time. Focus is on maintaining client relationships - which is nice compared to firms where it’s all about the punishing bottom line. Recently went...

    Cons

The Board is a black box, and no- one is clear on firm financials or firm goals. Leadership is a slippery ladder, as it’s been greased by people there ten years or longer before you. Definitely have to put in the time to see results. There are a couple fiefdoms- probably natural in a big firm. Find out who your team lead will be and what they work on. Can be not very progressive architecturally, though there are pockets...

    Advice to Management

More focus and transparency build trust in leadership. Explain the vision, show progress, and follow through so we can all feel proud of our accomplishments.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Large scale project experience is neat Computers and Servers were always up Parties?

    Cons

The primary reason I chose to leave was the lack of design leadership and a somewhat costly habit of trying to convince everyone to agree with the idea before someone will take the responsibility to issue a direction. When I was there, we had just gotten a few projects which were a bit too big for the experience level of the firm. Quality control was great for graphics, but a lot of projects went out the door too...

    Advice to Management

Delay and the lack of direction can look just as bad as making the wrong decision. Focus on the projects currently being designed. Budget more fee for CA. Learn staff member's personalities, specialties, and desires. Pair up Design and Construction Principals to lead studios / teams.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very good onboarding procedures set up, but once you're "integrated," you're on your own. Opportunity for professional development or training, often times it was because there spare time because there was no actual project assigned.

    Cons

This company hires warm bodies. Management thinks firm size matters. The firm's emphasis is more on building the firm "empire" than on successfully integrating new staff into the fold. It took 6 months to be assigned to a legit project and the whole time direct managers had no clue what skills, talents and abilities their employees had. It became obvious the company expects people to find their own way. If you don't...

    Advice to Management

This firm does a lot of things right, but they fail BIG on some very important things. Given the firm's status, the firm could be a huge positive influence in the industry. But people are commodities here. Management needs to - but likely will not - rethink their cynical values. Currently, this company is an empire built for the benefit of it's senior leadership at the expense of under-appreciated and under-utilized...

    Ankrom Moisan Architects Response

    June 16, 2017HR Manager

I can assure you that Ankrom Moisan takes lay-offs very seriously. We recognize that being laid-off is a life changing event for the staff member that is affected. It can be disheartening, traumatic, and can produce feelings of anger and despair. As such, we try to make the ...
