      Pros

The work environment at AMA is full of collaboration, creativity, and uniqueness. Team members constantly challenge each other to be bigger and better, pushing one another to think "outside the box" to make the magic happen. The office is fun, warm, welcoming, and friendly. Ankrom Moisan works hard to provide a great work/life balance for their employees. They are flexible with their scheduling, provide comp. time/production...

      Cons

Say what you will about the layoffs a year ago. Mistakes were made, cutbacks needed to happen, yes. It was difficult for some but as a result, the AMA machine seems to be moving in the right direction once again. Since the cutbacks, not all of the pre-2017 benefits have returned. Sometimes decision-making can be slow and you must consistently follow up, but push enough and you'll get what you're looking for.

      Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. They are your biggest sales tool. Keep them happy and the company will prosper.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

        Nice office with standing desks.

        Cons

Low pay and filled with old leadership that can't operate with or develop young talent. Revolving door of young talent b/c leadership won't remove dead weight. Leadership seems to prefer drama/gossip rather than analyzing overpaid senior employees and truly ineffective staff.

        Advice to Management

Don't try not to be something you're not.

I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 5 years

        Pros

The best part about AMA is there are very few jerks. Generally it’s a very friendly, non competitive culture where people want to see each other succeed, and work as a team. Communication and team leadership are usually good, as people have been working together for a long time. Focus is on maintaining client relationships - which is nice compared to firms where it’s all about the punishing bottom line. Recently went...

        Cons

The Board is a black box, and no- one is clear on firm financials or firm goals. Leadership is a slippery ladder, as it’s been greased by people there ten years or longer before you. Definitely have to put in the time to see results. There are a couple fiefdoms- probably natural in a big firm. Find out who your team lead will be and what they work on. Can be not very progressive architecturally, though there are pockets...

        Pros

More flexible work schedule than you would find at other architecture firms. Good compensation plan for time off.

        Cons

Pay was not up to par for the cost of living in Portland. They went through a big growth period and then had to let many people go due to poor financial management. Higher ups were not aware of everything going on at lower levels and it seemed they were not interested in fighting for good employees who were leaving. Quantity over quality.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time

        Pros

Many genuine, caring people work here. There is mentorship and opportunity for growth for those who seek it out. Acceptable level of work-life balance in general. Support for licensure.

        Cons

The compensation is well below market rate, upper management is out of touch with what matters to employees and makes decisions that lack vision. Heavy male bias in certain roles and perception of gender pay inequity. Not a clear design process on certain teams and projects.

        Advice to Management

Need more training at the executive level, especially CEO leadership. Need to improve at recognizing and rewarding the talents of the company's many hard workers rather than gravitating to shiny objects and misguided branding campaigns.

        Pros

I've never worked at a company where I truly like everyone I work with. I think we're all fairly laid back, easy going architects and designers that want to do great work. There are no egos here and the company prides themselves on it. Work-life balance is alive and well here and the projects are managed fairly well. Cons

The lay-offs last year put a dark cloud over our reputation and our employees, but I think the firm is working to overcome that and be stronger on the other side.

        Advice to Management

Continue to listen to the staff and don't be afraid to make big changes!

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

AMA celebrates being entrepreneurial, via the founders of the company. Some employees can take advantage of it, creating interesting opportunities for themselves. The office spaces are really nice. It's a big enough business to find people who care about the same things you do (design, PM-ing, QC, BD, etc.) and form good relationships in and out of work. The work / life balance for people with families is relatively widespread...

Leadership. On the surface, the corporate culture seems great. Casual, friendly, free coffee, fun events, etc. But, if you scratch the surface - which most of us have after the debacle of 2017 - you will notice that leadership fosters a culture of mistrust, cattiness, inauthenticity and irresponsibility. If they feel threatened by a person or idea, it goes very badly. To put it simply: watch your back. Be a YES man...

        Advice to Management

The time for lip service is over. Stop masking the toxic problems and actually deal with them—everyone can see through the smoke screen and are ready for actual change. Get the right leadership team in place who can form trusting and inspiring relationships with staff AND clients. Don’t just talk about listening—actually do it, and be prepared for some hard truths. Don’t punish the people brave enough to speak up. Looking...
