I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - good variety of project types (multi-family, senior housing, student housing, healthcare), and scales (small TI's up to high-rise buildings). - design culture is communicated, with options for informal crits, reviews, etc. - project support: in-house BIM help, technical and code-focused staff, in-house IT - current versions of software made available each year - ARE study resources are available, including Black Spectacles

    Cons

    - there have been 2 layoffs over the past three years, with a significant number of staff let go each time - Mentorship within the company has never really stuck; programs have been started and fizzled out several times over the last few years - the company's financial health seems to be getting better, but it's still a big question mark.

"Terrific ground level game; upper echelons unfathomable"

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A relaxed but focused vibe. Great atmosphere to work in. Good collaboration among teams. Lots of expertise to be found and shared. Super amenable to work-life balance needs. Projects are not high-end magazine cover architecture, but they are usually solid, good and rational designs. Designers work hard to deliver good results. Input is listened to. If you want to float on the far edge of experimental design, this is not the place. If you want to contribute to quality architecture that can actually get built, AMA is a good place for it.

    Cons

Repeated mass layoffs. The firm has repeatedly gutted itself. Interiors often feels distant from Architecture when they should be working hand-in-hand.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time

    Pros

Seemingly friendly and relaxed, some cool projects. They do a very good job of not overloading people with too much work.

    Cons

Managers selectively supportive; too much politics, not enough rationale. Some managing staff only want a few select people to design, and everyone else play supportive roles. Some are more open for more flexible roles. Managers sometimes won't take the time to understand context or both sides of a story, and will take accusations at face value. Not a very stable financial firm either. 3 layoffs in 5 years.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Seattle employees are like family and really care.

    Cons

It is disappointing to see a top rated place to work turn into such an unfeeling corporate environment. Certain leadership are ruining the culture, and there is rampant favoritism. Great ideas are not heard because they hate change and will not listen to low level staff. Relieved to be laid off so I don't have to take pay cuts at an already low paying job while having extra work responsibilities piled on.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

This place has many talented and experienced staff that serve as a good resource for young professionals to work and learn on. The new office is nice, and the office culture is okay but somehow it seemed better at the old location.

    Cons

The firm leadership have turned this place into an oligarchy of individuals who rarely take time to connect with their employees. Firm initiatives were very much a top-down procedure that lost momentum when they were enacted on the rest of the 80 percent. Surprisingly poor compensation when compared with other firms in the area. A lot of developer driven projects have produced a lot of boxy designs that are uninteresting and lack character.
