    Pros

AMA celebrates being entrepreneurial, via the founders of the company. Some employees can take advantage of it, creating interesting opportunities for themselves. The office spaces are really nice. It's a big enough business to find people who care about the same things you do (design, PM-ing, QC, BD, etc.) and form good relationships in and out of work. The work / life balance for people with families is relatively widespread...

    Cons

Leadership. On the surface, the corporate culture seems great. Casual, friendly, free coffee, fun events, etc. But, if you scratch the surface - which most of us have after the debacle of 2017 - you will notice that leadership fosters a culture of mistrust, cattiness, inauthenticity and irresponsibility. If they feel threatened by a person or idea, it goes very badly. To put it simply: watch your back. Be a YES man...

    Advice to Management

The time for lip service is over. Stop masking the toxic problems and actually deal with them—everyone can see through the smoke screen and are ready for actual change. Get the right leadership team in place who can form trusting and inspiring relationships with staff AND clients. Don’t just talk about listening—actually do it, and be prepared for some hard truths. Don’t punish the people brave enough to speak up. Looking...

    Pros

Hearts in a good place, good supply of return clients proves good value to the client.

    Cons

Not accepting the fact that the staff is felt to be fiscally penalized for mis-judgments and decisions out their purview and paying for those mis-steps with thier salaries. The market is very busy now, unlike 2010, and the best and brightest are jumping ship at an alarming rate to other firms. the obvious pattern of that dynamic is not recognized, or just accepted, by the upper management allowing trained staff, that...

    Advice to Management

Before the firm looses more valuable individuals, compensate those current employees to a market-rate salary before another firm does.

    Pros

Office culture (pre 2017) Free coffee Beer on tap Nice office space Technology

    Cons

The number one problem with AMA is the leadership (or the lack of). Ever since the new President took over the firm 3 years ago things have been going downhill for the firm. AMA grew way too fast for their own good. Within the span of a year starting in 2016, they built a brand new office building for Portland, moved Seattle into a new office space, and acquired a new San Francisco firm. They overspent on their construction...

    Advice to Management

Get someone that actually knows how to run a business in charge of the firm. Listen to your employees before the rest of your talents jump ship.

    Pros

Coworkers, coffee machine, beautiful office space.

    Cons

The leadership and management. Empty promises, mixed messages of what is actually going on, and leaders that seem so out of the loop and aren't willing to get in the loop. Or pretend to but take no action. The culture has gone down hill. It's no secret there were layoffs, but the handling of the layoffs and the damage control after further damaged the culture.

    Advice to Management

Listen to those who work for you. Learn how to be effective leaders. If you don't have a real answer to something, don't just say what your employees want to hear, tell the truth. Better yet, don't make false promises about something when you're not certain of the truth and outcome.

I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Easygoing, open, collaborative culture. Very little internal politics. Great work... lots of independence, leadership that 'gets it'. Egos don't run rampant. Bad clients are rare, if not completely absent.

    Cons

Seattle office is treated as a satellite of the main Portland office, although this doesn't really impact the day-to-day work.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! The trajectory is all positive!

    Pros

Warm and friendly environment in a beautiful new office. Management is easily accessible, and open to new ideas. Excellent group of amazingly talented professionals striving to make the company successful.

    Cons

Open office concept at times can be distracting. Large firm makes it difficult to build relationships with everyone.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work, and open communication.

    Pros

Nice brand new office, culture is laid back, and able to make life-long friendships with a few co-workers. Lots of opportunities for learning fresh out of school.

    Cons

Need to be in the "in-crowd" or you won't survive. The ones who do the hard work are passed over come promotion time.

    Advice to Management

Refer to review on June 9, 2015... "Manage growth before growth manages the company".... In 2017, growth managed the company.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than a year

    Pros

principals are approachable and respectful. the seattle office is a nice environment to work in but the company overspent on the build. relax environment with a decent work culture. people get a long and work together nicely.

    Cons

company pays low and paasive aggressively demands people to work over time. most all of their projects are junky developer project (how can we shove as many 500sf apartments onto this given property and make it look livable). the work is very dry, mostly drafting and documenting. raises are bad as well as annual bonuses. promotions are "titles" with no pay raise and more work responsibility. no chance of growth here....

    Pros

Great office space, nice people. Comradery and playfulness among all levels of staff. Meetings can be productive but also not too serious.

    Cons

The company should be experiencing an all-time profit building best, but instead several years of low fee proposals to win projects and poor financial planning have left them in bad shape. It’s actually really sad to watch. The company cannot keep up with current employee compensation rates, so where people used to be willing to stay even with the lower pay, now its a different story since low pay + low morale doesn’t...

    Advice to Management

Keep being transparent about the issues the company is facing. Don’t work on projects that don’t make the company any money. Something dramatic is going to have to happen in order to keep talent. An even further staff reduction (thus equal reduction in number of no-profit projects) has to happen in order to balance out overworked and underpaid staff.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Relaxed atmosphere and welcoming environment (at least prior to layoffs) - Great benefits (Medical/Dental/Vision)

    Cons

This company is experiencing major financial issues. In the past two months they've gone through two rounds of layoffs, getting rid of over 50 employees. They’ve gotten rid of any office perks (beer/wine, travel, educational benefits, conferences, etc). Employee morale is at a new low. The last two years have been record profit years. Then in a single year they decided to move the Seattle office, build a new office,...

    Advice to Management

If you want the company to make a profit and rescue yourselves from the bad decisions you’ve made, you need to have a concrete plan. If you can’t come up with an actionable, concrete plan then it’s time to get someone in who will. Upper management needs to hire some employees who have actually been to business school.
