I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The best part about AMA is there are very few jerks. Generally it’s a very friendly, non competitive culture where people want to see each other succeed, and work as a team. Communication and team leadership are usually good, as people have been working together for a long time. Focus is on maintaining client relationships - which is nice compared to firms where it’s all about the punishing bottom line. Recently went...

    Cons

The Board is a black box, and no- one is clear on firm financials or firm goals. Leadership is a slippery ladder, as it’s been greased by people there ten years or longer before you. Definitely have to put in the time to see results. There are a couple fiefdoms- probably natural in a big firm. Find out who your team lead will be and what they work on. Can be not very progressive architecturally, though there are pockets...

    Advice to Management

More focus and transparency build trust in leadership. Explain the vision, show progress, and follow through so we can all feel proud of our accomplishments.

    Pros

More flexible work schedule than you would find at other architecture firms. Good compensation plan for time off.

    Cons

Pay was not up to par for the cost of living in Portland. They went through a big growth period and then had to let many people go due to poor financial management. Higher ups were not aware of everything going on at lower levels and it seemed they were not interested in fighting for good employees who were leaving. Quantity over quality.

I worked at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Office culture (pre 2017) Free coffee Beer on tap Nice office space Technology

    Cons

The number one problem with AMA is the leadership (or the lack of). Ever since the new President took over the firm 3 years ago things have been going downhill for the firm. AMA grew way too fast for their own good. Within the span of a year starting in 2016, they built a brand new office building for Portland, moved Seattle into a new office space, and acquired a new San Francisco...

    Advice to Management

Get someone that actually knows how to run a business in charge of the firm. Listen to your employees before the rest of your talents jump ship.

I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Easygoing, open, collaborative culture. Very little internal politics. Great work... lots of independence, leadership that 'gets it'. Egos don't run rampant. Bad clients are rare, if not completely absent.

    Cons

Seattle office is treated as a satellite of the main Portland office, although this doesn't really impact the day-to-day work.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! The trajectory is all positive!

I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Opportunities are given to everyone if they pursue the things they want to do. Great offices and work environments Great people. They do good work overall, so the finished projects are rewarding if you've worked on them.

    Cons

Not much help is given if you don't seek it out. Portland vs Seattle office work culture can clash from time to time.

    Advice to Management

Keep a closer eye on the abilities of your employees, and highlight resources when you see exceptional talent.

I have been working at Ankrom Moisan Architects

    Pros

Wonderful people! Everyone is very friendly! They use Revit, but have a very structured approach to using Revit.... at least it's better than a firm that still uses AutoCrap. The projects are ok, depends on who you're working with (team). Overall, very pleasant company to work for. They promote mindfulness and no egos. An architecture firm that doesn't promote egos?!? I know, I didn't believe it at first but everyone...

Office location, but that's changing Spring 2016! AMA is moving to downtown Portland along the waterfront in a building they designed!!!

    Advice to Management

    Keep it going!
