I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Library full-time

    Pros

    Nice people to work with.

    Cons

Tech equipment woefully out of date. AACPL needs to catch up with trends. They are serving the customers of yesterday, not tomorrow.

    Advice to Management

Pour more money into technology. You're losing your patrons if you don't.

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Library part-time for less than a year

      Pros

I already worked at the Anne Arundel Public Library when I was in High School, so I knew that it was a great place to work. Now I am working there again as a part-time hourly for the information desk and so far I have been having a great experience! The work is not too taxing and I enjoy being able to talk to Library Patrons and to help them find what they're looking for.

      Cons

I wish that I got more hours. Since I'm only working part-time, they call me when I'm needed, and so far I've only been working about 20 hours a month. I wish it were 20 hours a week!

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Library part-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

flexible scheduling, comprehensive performance reviews, lots to keep busy with, staff is friendly and gives opportunities to everyone to grow, they encourage independent work and self motivation.

      Cons

This library system has not kept up technologically with other library systems in the state, in my opinion. It Doesn't appear to move as fast with changing technology to anticipate the needs of the customers.

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Library full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

The environment is comfortable and friendly. The benefits are very good and there are some unusual offerings such as a legal benefits by subscription program which provides legal counsel on demand - good for important matters such as wills. There is a retirement savings program with T Rowe Price, and a medical savings account, as well as membership in the excellent local credit union (SECU.) And a pension plan - in these...

      Cons

There is a great feeling of entitlement among long-time employees, many of whom have never worked anywhere else. They NEVER heard "If you are that unhappy perhaps you'd be better off working somewhere else" from their boss so there is a good deal of unjustified whining. Of course there is going to be whining in any organization but I'm talking about people who have not experienced a really bad work environment, which...

      Advice to Management

Much energy is spent on decisions which are of little or no consequence. Make a decision and dispense with so much discussion. There are many who have been insulted at being blown off after arranging their schedules to attend meetings, only to have Admin. not show up, or leave early. Conversely, sometimes radical decisions are made with no discussion at all, which causes much uncertainty in the ranks. Change for...

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Library full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

A friendly, comfortable work environment The organization is large enough to allow for changes such as transfers to make for the best fit for an employee Excellent benefits • A pension plan (!) • Generous amounts of leave from Day One of employment • Very good medical benefits with choice of coverage (HMO to premium services) and vision, dental • Options to join medical flexible spending account and deferred...

      Cons

Working with the public can be stressful There are some real rotten apples who have caused much trouble and suffered few consequences. In another organization they would have been sacked. A sense of entitlement which sometimes leads to inappropriate behaviors, as mentioned above - toes get stepped on for no good reason

      Advice to Management

Change for the sake of change is causing unnecessary anxiety Impulsive, unconsidered decisions are going to backfire Agonizing over inconsequential decisions takes up time better spent on more important budgetary concerns Too broad a culture of "valuing everyone's opinion" when "everyone" doesn't really know enough to have an opinion
