I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good health benefits. Comparatively competent administrators.

    Cons

Generally, the employment conditions and job quality for teaching in AACPS are very low. If you're from out of state, be prepared to be astonished by the amount of "extra" meetings and nonsense---more so than other places. While you could do worse, if you're not accustomed to working in districts with a low employment standard, you should avoid. Don't relocate for this.

    Advice to Management

    Get a reality check.

    Pros

The community of teachers at my school is amazing. They support each other and collaborate very well.

    Cons

Teacher Pay - The teachers are not compensated as well as other counties in MD.
Teacher Workload -The county expects more and more paperwork and does not compensate teachers for this extra work
Special education limitations - children and teachers are not supported with enough special education services. It takes a long time to get children help and regular teachers have to make up the difference.
Underfunded - classroom are underfunded all the way around. We have limited funds for materials and personnel.

    Pros

Great kids. Most teachers care about teaching.

    Cons

Too many requirements. A lot of unnecessary steps - why? Sometimes teaching gets pushed to the last place.

    Advice to Management

The art of teaching has been buried beneath initiatives - most feel imposed to just keep us busy.

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Teachers have some creative freedom because the bureaucracy is so big they can’t micromanage everything. I haven’t been observed in two years.

Another good thing is that the other teachers are by-and-large great people.

    Cons

Teacher pay was frozen for 5 years straight and has never returned to the agreed contract that I signed when I was hired. Also, it is a bureaucratic mess at the board of ed. Massive waste to have such a top heavy BOE. Most of the people at the BOE are just hanging out in cubicles checking Facebook. I once watched a guy playing a first person shooter game for 45 minutes while I was meeting with one of his colleagues in an adjacent cubicle. The tech department also needs to be sacked and rebuilt from ground up. They don’t allow teachers or students on the WiFi and have everything so locked down that tech savvy teachers like myself have to break all sorts of rules to teach. All the kids just download VPN extensions on their browsers.

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students and other teachers are great to work with. Really good benefits.

    Cons

The cost of living is ridiculously high in the area. I had to leave because I was sick of living with roommates. I couldn't afford my own place. Teachers rarely get raises for political reasons.

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Learn a great deal of teaching strategies. Depending on where you work, good working environment and employees. A lot of professional development to help teachers enhance teaching skills

    Cons

admin can deny tenure for any reason. Admin not very supportive of student discipline. A lot of gossip. A lot of cliques.
