I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools part-time

    Pros

Decent pay, easy to use job announcement site, awesome staff, great kids

    Cons

The phone system calls you a lot but you can update your contact information so that it doesn't call you at all.

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students and other teachers are great to work with. Really good benefits.

    Cons

The cost of living is ridiculously high in the area. I had to leave because I was sick of living with roommates. I couldn't afford my own place. Teachers rarely get raises for political reasons.

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Learn a great deal of teaching strategies. Depending on where you work, good working environment and employees. A lot of professional development to help teachers enhance teaching skills

    Cons

admin can deny tenure for any reason. Admin not very supportive of student discipline. A lot of gossip. A lot of cliques.

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

I liked all of my coworkers (in the limited time you get to see them throughout the day), had an amazing, hard-working department chair, and had the opportunity to teach an upper level class from when I was hired (with no teaching experience). Other experienced teachers told me to get out of education, as its no longer what it once was and I was congratulated for "escaping" to a new job.

    Cons

Student accountability is non-existent. Administration does very little to discipline students, which is also a result of parents doing little to discipline. There wasn't a cell phone policy in place so in conjunction with administration and parental support, its next to impossible to compete with Snapchat and youtube.
The "Step Raises" are not guaranteed; they are negotiated by the union every year along with CoL increases. So for the past 5+ years teachers have actually been getting poorer since these were only funded once.

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It helped me get experience in a challenging environment when I got job out of college. Have some good experiences working with the kids there.

    Cons

Terrible leaders in high positions who don’t care about children and make decisions based on politics. No respect for teachers in the county and it shows!

    Advice to Management

Hire people at higher positions based off of their drive not their desire for more money

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    healthcare benefits are very good

    Cons

    1. Salaries are not competitive due to failure to give teachers the step increases they were informed they would receive when they were hired.
    2. Climate - the top down management style toward teachers is condescending, scornful, dictatorial and outdated. Class sizes exceed the limits and increasingly unmanageable workloads result in burn out low morale and high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Respect teachers. Honor your agreements to provide salary step increases. Cap class size to no more than 30 students and monitor work load so that the 37.5 hours per week we are contracted to work is honored.
