I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

    Excellent colleagues and school-based staff

    Cons

Significant inequity between schools based on no differentiation or additional resources provided for schools with higher needs. Some schools have high burnout potential.

    Advice to Management

Differentiated professional development based on the needs of the schools. Provided relief to overworked and overwhelmed faculty in schools with high needs and little additional support.

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Benefits are wonderful and inexpensive. The schedule for time off is also a plus.

    Cons

It is difficult to change roles within the system once hired. Student behavior is negatively impacting instruction. Pay increases ( by step) have been frozen for quite some time.

    Advice to Management

Support teachers more, as many are leaving.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Schools have varying start times, nice to be able to choose an earlier school

    Cons

-Barely any opportunities for professional development during school hours (almost all are after school hours or on weekends)
-Teachers do not have planning time every day
-One random long day each week, where you must stay an hour after your regular time
-Very test score driven and focused, no care about educating the whole child
-Supervisors on different levels do not communicate, making expectations unclear and inconsistent depending on who you talk to
-Scripted curriculum you must follow, takes the joy out of teaching and is not effective or appropriate for all learners

I could not recommend this county less. Coming from another county in the state, AACPS is absolutely terrible. There is no respect for teachers and they are not trusted. Everyone seems disgruntled and disheartened. Look into another county where you will be treated better and respected more!

*This is coming from a "highly effective" teacher with between 5-10 years experience.

    Advice to Management

You hired teachers you thought were great, LET THEM TEACH and listen to them. Trust your teachers! You need to work a lot harder on developing cultural proficiency within your schools, as well, and need to start teaching health at every grade level in order to provide students with a more well-rounded curriculum. Pay attention to what other counties are doing and give your teachers sufficient planning time each day, varied opportunities for professional development during their contractual hours, and make your school calendar and hours worked match other counties nearby. Pay your employees what you promised to in their contacts. Acknowledge your shortcomings instead of making excuses and then work to remedy them.

    Pros

The County is so disorganized that you can get away with a lot

    Cons

Salary, support, lack of trust in the teachers, constantly changing direction.

    Advice to Management

    Actually trust your teachers.

    Pros

If you have the skills then you get the pay but then again they have not gotten any increase in years.

    Cons

Racism is strong here and exist in a quiet nuances as if you do not belong if you are brown, black, or anything other than whiteness.

    Advice to Management

    N/A

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good health benefits. Comparatively competent administrators.

    Cons

Generally, the employment conditions and job quality for teaching in AACPS are very low. If you're from out of state, be prepared to be astonished by the amount of "extra" meetings and nonsense---more so than other places. While you could do worse, if you're not accustomed to working in districts with a low employment standard, you should avoid. Don't relocate for this.

    Advice to Management

    Get a reality check.
