I worked at Anthem Blue Cross of California full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Stability of industry and job, interesting work, good work life balance, a good balance of travel and work outside the office
Above average benefits package and great training opportunities, tuition assistance
Great position for networking and career learning as a young professional

    Cons

Legacy systems and old business processes, efficiency and innovation is lacking
It's a large complex organization operating in different ways across segments and states, so it's often hard to find people to the job done
Few younger people in my department
Very little social interaction, it was a dead zone
No annual increase to base salary in my position, performance metrics not related to things I could actually influence

    Advice to Management

Flatten some of your hierarchies, invest in good customer service, and modernize your HR culture

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Anthem Blue Cross of California (More than a year)

    Pros

Big company that is not likely to go out of business

    Cons

This company charts how quickly a human body can do each and every minute task it takes to do any of their jobs. It has done so for at least 30 years. Over the years they have reduced the required time for each task in order to get more production out of the human assets for less time. So, these days one has to be near Tom Cruz's professional level in the movie Mission Impossible to meet production standards. You run very fast there from the time you get in the door, until the time you leave. Many of my co-workers did not take breaks, and/or only ate at their desks for a few minutes, not taking a full lunch break ever.

    Advice to Management

None. If they can get away with it, this is a capitalistic society in a global market, then go for it. - I would do the same thing if I was in management. (I'm not management though, and so will not choose to work for that company again. There are easier companies to work for.

I worked at Anthem Blue Cross of California full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Medical powerhouse that is also focused on the ancillary market and has invested in the integration of all benefits.

    Cons

Big company with multiple distribution channels (commercial, Labor and TPA's that do not communicate well with one another), limited in some states.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully the Cigna merger fails. It will be a mess if it goes through (and probably won't regardless). De-emphasize PPO's and look into alternative funding arrangements: pricing transparency on hospital billing, reference based pricing (benchmarking as opposed to discounts off of billed charges etc.).
