The opportunity to do contract work for a company at home with flexible hours should be attractive for almost anyone. Appen I would say is at the forefront of the tech sector providing new opportunities for those that participate while advancing the way computers interact with us.
Cons
What most people do not know is that they are participating to give computers more understanding of the human mind by uploading their thought processes to computers by means of ratings advertisements or how they interact with advertisements. It could be a great thing if it remains transparent but if most people that do not understand what is going on the gap may become so wide that accountability may become a real issue.

Low pay. Not easy to get in contact with management. No benefits, pay raises, or promotion options. A lot of errors and downtime on their end, all of which is unpaid.

The hours are flexible and you get to choose if you want to do a job or not. There's a lot of variety in the jobs available and there's always new projects coming out that you can do.
Cons
The pay is not great at all for most of the projects. One job I worked, there was a discrepancy between what their system said I did and the actual hours I put in. They didn't pay any attention to my complaint about it, and it was maybe $100 worth of work.
