I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good working environment with focus on innovation and product quality; competent people with the right experience and know-how; good collaborative relationship in most cases

    Cons

Research and development lacked focus and follow through; tried too many "New Things" instead of concentrating research efforts on the core competency of the company; taking short cuts when pressured to meet unreasonable deadlines

    Advice to Management

Keep eyes on the price and put faith in bigger returns from long term investment, do it right the first time, instead of get by first and fix it later

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

One of the best innovators of molecular biology reagents. Good working environment.

    Cons

Not many - although since it is a big company you sometimes find infrastructure issues.

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It was a great place to work for ; awesome benefits!

    Cons

Career opportunities take time; especially moving up.

  5. "Great company until the merger with Intvitrogen"

    Pros

Passionate and bright team. People enjoyed working there. For a biotech company had good work/life balance. Foster City campus was easy to reach from various spots on the peninsula and east bay.

    Cons

The merger with Invitrogen changed everything. The culture was totally different post-merger when it became Life Technologies, which was too bad. Lots of people left.

    Advice to Management

Should never have agreed to the acquisition. I would still be there if it was still ABI

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was just an ok company to work at.

    Cons

There was disconnection between the upper management and the R&D teams, so often times the R&D groups had to figure out what to do without a unified direction. This led to unnecessary tensions between different groups. I left the company a few years ago, but I heard this culture still lingers there.

  7. "Not bad"

    Pros

    Good products and good people

    Cons

    They tend to buy talent

    Advice to Management

I have nothing to say to management

  8. "Good experience"

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of good people working there. Good place to move to different positions. Good management and benefits. Foster City is a nice location. There are lots of good equipment to work on and get very involved with the company.

    Cons

I do not see any cons except that sometimes they try to do things that are not going to work. The try to innovate when it is not broken.

    Advice to Management

    Good management

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great pay, great co-workers, learned alot, very fun work environment

    Cons

Immense amount of work, worked harder here then anywhere. It was fun and great, but at times challenging and sometimes felt like too much. But still I don't regret the time I spent here. I was laid off along with my entire department, but still I hold no grudges.

  10. "The R&D is very active."

I worked at Applied Biosystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the facility and working conditions at ABI. I could obtain almost anything that was needed for my research.

    Cons

People are not very friendly. Some managers tended to take other people's credits. If you were not good at kissing the ass of your manager, it would be hard for you to be promoted.

    Advice to Management

    Be fair to everybody.
