    Pros

It's great for scientists to work on important projects that improve the health of the human race.
Large company atmosphere with a variety of interesting projects.
AB hires someof the best people in the Bay Area to work there, so when you have the right people on the right project, things can go really well and you learn a lot.

    Cons

Unless you are on the top project, you are resourced very thinly.
Current merger creates an atmosphere of distrust, unknown future, and unclear company direction.
Career opportunities are very limited. AB does not promote from within, instead it hires from outside for senior jobs, leaving employees with limited, if any, career advancement opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Take more care when making decisions and cascade on a regular basis.
Take a more proactive approach in mentoring from within for leadership development.
No CSO for a science company? What message does that send for engineers and scientists?

    Pros

Laid back culture, yet produces high-quality, high-caliber products. There are strong posse's where new employee s mix with those that have been there for 10+ years. My manager is strong and intelligent and genuinely cares, which makes for a great environment. Lots of talented, creative, honest, and fun people to work with.

    Cons

Invitrogen buy-out has people are worried about their jobs.

Additionally, AB bought out a company whose lingering senior management are clearly out for themselves. It gets in the way of doing good work and has made the environment political, rather than practical.

    Advice to Management

Sky's the limit -- make the merger a true partnership.

    Pros

Good place to learn the business aspects of genetics technology. Ample resources for research. A healthy workplace environment, lots of young talent. Above average Bay Area employer in biotech.

    Cons

Executive management are careerists, non-visionary and rarely insightful. CYA is the order of the day at mid-level ranks, a top-down necessity. Rank and file staff are kept in the dark.

    Advice to Management

Get acquired by a decent company and retire, please.

    Pros

Better than average compensation. Generally nice and professional colleagues.

    Cons

Senior management looking to retire. Lack of risk taking.

    Advice to Management

Biotechnology is a risky field, grow or die. Being bought by a smaller company with aggressive management is an embarassment.

    Pros

smart people, working with people from very different professional backgrounds, interesting problems

    Cons

Management disconnected from employees. Constant reorganization. Good people leave; bad people get promoted. No real vision for the future or willingness to take risks. CEO never sets foot in Foster City.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your office and walk around and talk to people. Show some vision; if you allow a project to start, let it finish. Don't cut it off in the middle. It's demoralizing

    Pros

The company is working to help life sciences, medicine, and quality of life. Very interesting science.

    Cons

Executive staff tend to resolve problems by finding someone to blame and firing them. The consequences are a company full of employees who try to undercut each other, take credit where it is not due, make other people look bad, and lack integrity.

    Advice to Management

CFO is more concerned with appearances than with honesty, integrity, or fairness.

    Pros

It's there. Seriously, it's an easy commute from Mountain View

    Cons

Insincere , even sociopaths, in management . Backstabbing and political maneuvering by the employees is richly rewarded whilst quality work is of no apparent value. Have seen many many people laid off for what appears to be getting too old and having been too loyal. Also, they will work you to death - a constant grind for which the reward is - you get to keep your crappy job - maybe.

    Advice to Management

Stay where you are and hire more like yourselves. We need to concentrate your kind in as small an area as possible.

    Pros

Great potential to succeed and develop your skills being surrounded by so many talented people. A lot of patents and pride by employees.

    Cons

Management was lacking passion and vision. If this doesn't get fixed the company is doomed. I wish that they would hire some outside people.
