I worked at Applied Industrial Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Their benefits package was good and gives you an opportunity to select a plan that makes sense for you and your family.

    Cons

Upper and senior management turns a blind eye when it comes to other managers abuse of their position. For example, managers who come in by 10 a.m. and are leaving by 3 for the day, but not before taking a lunch.

    Advice to Management

Take a good hard look at the managers you have in place by factoring in, or comparing to, turn over in a department. Maybe then you will realize where the real problem is and you won't continue to lose good employees while keeping poor managers.

    Pros

The pay and hours are pretty good for first job out of college. The team is nice and understanding and works well with families.

    Cons

Very inconsistent, when I started they said every Friday we’d go in at 7 and get off at 4, then it turned into every other Friday now I’m not even sure. SAP system is a major con this is a complete waste and they micro manage everything. The worst part is all the videos and online courses you take to instead of getting real experience. They worry too much about getting that done and test (yes test) than real work. When applying for other jobs in the same field or manufacturing AIT is looked down on and other companies that use SAP due to lack of real work knowledge and lack of experience in working independently without management tellingyou every move to make.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of SAP system and all the videos this ridiculous and a waste of time!

    Pros

Good company with good leadership. Company strategy and business objectives are clear. In most cases you are free to do your job with little day to day monitoring. If you do your job and work you will be successful. It's a flatter organization so career movement is mostly lateral no vertical.

    Cons

It's a large organization so communication is an ongoing area for improvement.

    Advice to Management

Develop your people, all of them and continue to invest in them no matter what their age or position. This company is loaded with talent and expertise.

I worked at Applied Industrial Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Applied was a great entry level job for me. They provided excellent training and support in the industrial distribution industry. They really try and get you up to speed into the workforce at the expense of their suppliers. The key manufacturers that they represent pretty much pay for the majority of the COMET program because they want you to sell their product.

Great training, great support, and great insight into the manufacturing industry!

    Cons

Unfortunately, the COMET program has an extremely high turnover rate. This is from an unclear path of what happens after the 10 month program. Once you finish the COMET program you are supposed to move into another role such as an Account Manager or Service Center Manager. However, some Comets stay inside as a customer service rep for several months, even years after finishing! This state of limbo is what causes comets to leave.

Secondly, they mislead you to think you are going to make a base + commission after finishing the COMET program and becoming an account manager. This is definitely not the case! They do a "draw" against commission. This means that depending on your base you have to make that much in commission first before you start making actual commission. If you do not make enough to pay off your base pay for that year then it goes as a negative for next year. This essentially means you owe Applied money, and you have to pay them back the next year on top of your current salary if you want to make any commission. If I would have known this in the interview process instead of thinking it was base + commission, than I would have never accepted their offer.

    Advice to Management

Please explain what the commission structure is to the Comets in the interview process so they know what they are getting themselves into after the program ends.

I worked at Applied Industrial Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great concept, very good products and solid program to offer to customers. Alot of freedom in developing your territory.

    Cons

Account Mangers handle all aspects of their territories. Sales, Service(item put away), Administrative duties, Sourcing and Collections. You are going to spend a great deal of your time doing activities that do not generate revenue. In a 100% commission sales role this presents serious problems. You are also responsible for all of your work related expenses. No reimbursement for mileage, no company cell phone or reimbursement. You do get a nifty little handheld scanner/computer but dont count on it to do more than scan barcodes.

    Advice to Management

Give your Account Managers more support to lighten their workloads so they can sell and generate revenue. Consider offering them even a small base salary or at least cover their expenses. You have a great program to offer your customers. But if you cant retain experienced sellers then you wont be able to gain any traction in the market. Also the staff in the corporate office is very helpful and they work hard. But they are grossly undermanned in customer service and special orders. Getting them more help will also help the Account Managers who dont want to pile more work on people who already have roo much on their plate.

    Pros

Challenging work and great customers make it a great job day to day
    Company vehicle if outside sales
    Vacation time

    Cons

Being on call 24/7 can be tough sometimes. Most customers call the account manager direct about any after hours needs

    Pros

Excellent and supportive team, great work life balance,
Interesting and challenging projects, great infrastructure and facility, very helpful upper management

    Cons

Unfortunately there is no work from home policy which makes it little difficult in terms of being flexible.
Also the number of vacation and sick leaves can be improved

I have been working at Applied Industrial Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The management at my branch is top-notch. Though I am not a fan of the decisions made corporately, my manager and co-workers make working at Applied worthwhile. Free shirts and Yeti cups from Vendors were a plus! Solid benefits, annual performance reviews can lead to raises.

    Cons

You have to work with SAP--which is a nightmare. Corporate is constantly coming up with new processes that tend to complicate day-to-day operations.

    Advice to Management

Simplify processes. It feels like no one up top consults the frontline employees. Also, please make Applied.com user friendly.
