I worked at Applied Materials full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large company with many opportunities to move internally

    Cons

This company treats women very poorly. I have personally experienced both discrimination and harassment. Management plays it lip service.

Benefits are poor compared to other tech companies to the point they are no longer competitive

Layoffs are frequent in all areas of the organization

NO work-life balance. Extremely long hours, forced PTO, poor attitude toward employees

    Advice to Management

This company has been going down hill for a long time. If you want to retain employees, you need to treat them like people. The landscape is very competitive and working for Applied Materials is no longer the level of prestige it used to be.

    Pros

    Pros

Major office and labs are in California. What bad can you say about California? Oh and their layoff package is also nice, so if you join the company with a mindset that you wanna be laid off, Applied Materials is THE ONE.

    Cons

Shutdown and layoff multiple times EVERY year since 2012. Take this year (2015) for example, there's shut down in July, September and probably another 2-week shutdown in Christmas. What about layoff? It's a continuous process, so even harder to quantify, but CMP has layoff of 20% in summer 2015.

What about management? Well? If you read my comments above, what do you expect from them?

    Advice to Management

Use AMAT's working term, we need to do some "purging" on the management level.

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company as a whole offers great benefits and seems to value it's employees.

    Cons

This office is a mess; literally and figuratively. The office is literally dirty and is a turn off as soon as you enter. Management has no regard for the employees and do not care about employee moral. Talking to management is like talking to a wall!

    Advice to Management

Upper management should really spend more time at satellite offices to see what is "really" happening there. Maybe have corporate HR come through on a regular basis and actually speak to employees.

I worked at Applied Materials full-time

    Pros

Applied is Still a leader in the industry.

    Cons

Very volatile business, many boom/bust cycles. Shutdown many weeks in a year to save money. No work and life balance. Long work hours and forced to work over the weekend. Engineers receive no respect from the top management. Horrible work place.

I have been working at Applied Materials (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice people to work with and convenient Cafe

    Cons

These are only from my experience in Etch group in Santa Clara:
No system in place. No real problem solving. No right way to store the BKMs and learning, so many times issues are repeat. No respect for employees. Safety system is lacking. IP protection system is not efficient. TR system is not followed at its best. Many engineers are only glorified technicians. Long waiting time to get approvals due to unnecessary bureaucracy (even for urgent cases such as ergonomic equipment). Failing major strategies (like the TEL merger). Possible favoritism due to the knowledge of Mandarin language.

    Advice to Management

Management better re-visit their plans and strategies in Etch group. Instead of selling bad tools to costumers and using connections keep the sales going they better fix Applied Materials internally to provide better products and service to gain costumers.

    Pros

Tuition reimbursement is generous. Cutting edge technology and products.

    Cons

Very hostile working environment. Leadership integrity is nowhere.

    Advice to Management

Less politics and caring more for employees. Don't try to lick wall street quarter by quarter at the cost of workforce.
