I worked at Applied Materials as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

constant learning opportunity, really loved the focus on keeping up to date with recent technologies and general focus on keeping employees educated

    Cons

It is a corporate environment so be prepared for things to happen kind of slowly. Luckily I worked in the CTO group so things weren't as bad, but working with other teams was rather difficult.

    Advice to Management

You're doing a great job! I really appreciated the feedback and general positive attitude. Only thing would be to communicate expectations a little bit better.

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work schedule is highly flexible allowing for nice work/life balance. Very intelligent peers make going to work a pleasure. Challenging projects keep the brain sharp.

    Cons

This is a large company so navigating through numerous databases, business software, and typical red tape for approvals can slow business down.

    Advice to Management

Continue to hire excellent employees. Retain them by modeling the benefits of other silicon valley companies. Build the camaraderie through offsite events, etc.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

It is a company full of great people with strong talents and a good reputation for quality and integrity. The director I support is committed to the success of the company and committed to my success as well.

    Cons

You must use PTO days if you are sick; there are no sick days available. Most US employers offer their workers 10 paid holidays, 2 weeks vacation, two personal days, and 8 sick leave days per year.

    Advice to Management

Assume that some things will go wrong and poke around to find out what they might be. Instead of waiting for problems to come to you, ask questions! Be clear about what you need people to do, whether it’s instructions on a project or a message about performance.

    Pros

Great place, lets you develop with guidance, no micromanaging

    Cons

Too many people in groups that have been working together for too long. It's hard for managers to be effective when the employees they are managing went to school with the manager and have worked with them for 20 years. Shuffling people around and bringing in new faces and new ideas can only benefit this company
