I worked at Applied Medical full-time for more than a year

      Pros

-A good place for recent graduates to get experience. There are a lot of resources at the company to get your feet wet in the industry. -Great health insurance with low employee cost. -Great work culture. It's a good mix of work and play. My team goes out for lunch every Friday, and will occasionally plan weekend trips and events. -Good work/life balance. Hours are typically 8-5 and no one expects you to stay after...

      Cons

-Inexperienced middle management. Most are young and started their first jobs with this company. Middle management is not held accountable for any decisions made. When things go awry, the finger pointing typically lands at the individual engineers that wrote the protocols and reports, regardless of if they contributed to any decision making. Be prepared to defend yourself, even if management approved your documents. ...

      Advice to Management

There needs to be less of a "get it done" attitude. A lot of the issues I experienced could be prevented if engineering teams were given more time to develop their products/processes before release. Teams could really benefit from a knowledgeable and experienced engineer to lead, but the low compensation at this company drives most experience away. Good engineers are out there, but the company must be willing to offer...

I worked at Applied Medical full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Vertically Integrated so you can learn everything from component to product manufacturing, full ownership of projects, engineers are young so it's easy to make friends at work, exposure with every single department, causal dress code, good work life balance (if you're not a manager), and RSM is a really nice area to work in.

      Cons

Low pay, terrible 401K, and middle management doesn't have a lot of support so you can either get a great manager or a manager who was forced to take on a team .

      Advice to Management

Applied Medical is a great company to work for as a new grad since you work on every single aspect of a project and you can gain exposure into the medical device industry. However, the pay is low (engineer I start off around 60-65k) compared to industry standards and the 401k is a joke (50% match up to 2% of your salary). There's no training for managers so some focus on career development and others are barely around....

I have been working at Applied Medical full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Start your career here if you cannot find job anywhere else. 8-5 job with little responsibility.

      Cons

The mid level management has no clue on what is being designed as there is lack of communication between software and Electrical teams. The management spend hours in useless meetings and blaming other groups. The CEO seems to be smart but again has no idea about the money being wasted in unwanted projects. The firing rate is high and innocent people are sacrificed to keep the mid management people employed and protected.

      Advice to Management

Conduct more surveys and explain to new team members about open door policy in person.

As you should be aware (and are hopefully participating in), we implemented quarterly team member surveys last year. We also introduced a day-long new team member welcome workshop (Applied Foundations) a couple of years ago, during which the open door policy is certainly covered. ...

I worked at Applied Medical for less than a year

      Pros

Exposure to many manufacturing processes. Given a variety of engineering projects to work on. Use Solidworks for projects. Clean room and assembly support experience. Present weekly reports.

      Cons

Not as much mentor-ship as I would have hoped for.

      Advice to Management

Focus on having supervisors mentor their interns more.

I have been working at Applied Medical full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Applied Medical is a great place to start your career and learn about medical devices and manufacturing. The employees are very friendly and helpful. There isn't pressure to take work home with you. Dress code is casual.

      Cons

Depends on department but most are strict on working hours from 8 am- 5 pm (no early/ late start). Salary is low compared to other companies. Firing rate is fairly high.

        Neutral Outlook
        No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Applied Medical for less than a year

        Pros

Vertically integrated company means there is a lot of opportunity to learn fundamental engineering skills from component level manufacture to top level assembly. Offers experience with in house machine shops, injection molding, automation, clean room assembly, etc. Good co-workers, decent work environment.

        Cons

Pay is low relative to other companies with no room for negotiations. Company model is based off of cost reduction and reproducing products from other medical device company with little to no focus on innovation.
