Company went chapter 11 and decided to short people on WARN

I worked at Aquion Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

We had a great team of people at Aquion. Everyone was trying hard and we had a great team spirit. It was a fun place to work.

    Cons

They filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2017 and laid-off 80% of us. The interesting thing is that all of upper level management got bonuses 39 days before the lay-off.

They made a lot of decisions without enough information.

    Advice to Management

If the company survives, make sure and test new versions of the batteries thoroughly before deciding whether or not to make them.

I have been working at Aquion Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Products you can feel good about delivering.
    -Fast-paced environment.
-Lots of passionate employees - more than "just a job" for most employees.
-Opportunity to get in early on a startup in a growing industry.
-Pay is good for a startup, plus the potential to earn shares in the company.
-Small enough to make you feel like your contributions are making a difference in the success of the company.

    Cons

-As with any startup, less job security than a larger, well established company (not sure where company will be in a year or two).
-Top-level management can be a little overbearing; can tend to micromanage at times.
-Top-level management could use some more diversity.

I have been working at Aquion Energy full-time

    Pros

    The people
    Getting to make an impact
    Solving hard problems
    Benefits

    Cons

The environment is typical of an emerging growth company. If you expect to sit around and do nothing, this will not work to your advantage. Driven, self directed people do well here.

    Maybe some updated office spaces.

I have been working at Aquion Energy full-time

    Pros

Aquion is an innovative Pittsburgh startup that's advancing clean energy. That sentence sums up why I work here. The work we're doing is incredibly important, and I feel good about coming to work. As a bonus, some of my close friends are also co-workers. Wouldn't have asked for or expected that, but it's a good indicator that the company hires well and has a strong enough mission to attract great talent.

    Cons

The benefits are good and the office culture is great, but it could use some more of the "cool startup" perks. Better stocked kitchen, volunteer days, more comfortable office space, etc.

I worked at Aquion Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people and good benefit package. You will work with some good and intelligent people. For the short time they may be there.

    Cons

Management could care less, people are down sized and treated like cattle. Other must then pick up the slack with no help or added pay.

    Advice to Management

    Stop letting good people go.

    Pros

It was great working and learning about a start-up-company, because everyone was new and trying their best to get things rolling

    Cons

The management team and leaders, were clueless in how to run a company

    Advice to Management

Don't be so disrespectful to your employee's that really wanted to see good things happen for the company

I worked at Aquion Energy full-time

    Pros

    Wonderful, environmentally-friendly energy storage device
    Well intended leadership

    Cons

Executive leadership needs to improve organization wide communications
No transparency on decisions that impact the entire company
Extremely long hiring process for such a small company

    Advice to Management

Treat your subordinates with respect... without them you will demoralize a great team.
