Sets you up for future roles elsewhere

    Pros

Great launching pad for a career in philanthropy or elsewhere. Get a bird's-eye view of philanthropy while forming connections that you'll appreciate as you mature in your career and look for future jobs.

    Cons

Pay was below market rate in 2018 and prior. That may have changed by now. Because everything was client facing and with billable hours, work/life balance was always a pain point on which leadership received feedback.

    Keep it moving

    Pros

-Good snacks and sometimes leftover food -Some flexibility in working from home

    Cons

As many have said, employees, especially those at the more junior level, are catastrophically underpaid relative to what is expected of them. It is largely impossible to complete assigned work in the time constraints of 40 hours a week. Junior-level employees are frequently condescended, belittled, and made to feel like there was someone always looking to discipline them. Minor mistakes or preferences in work production were blown out of proportion and reported to supervisors instead of corrected to the employee directly. I noticed there were cliques within the company, which led to gossipping and unprofessional behavior. Additionally, there was a serious lack of diversity and inclusion across the company. The high turnover reflects a hostile environment, not employees not being a good fit for the company. If you want to do good for the world and have a positive work experience, you will probably do that and make the same or better salary working at a nonprofit instead of for this company.

    Pros

    Pros

I really enjoyed my time at Arabella. I had great colleagues, great benefits and learned a lot from senior leadership. The company culture also was consistent with the company values and I felt like I was a part of something greater and enjoy going to work.

    Cons

Very corporate environment, not as dynamic as I would like.

Inspiring work & people, poor work/life balance

Mar 15, 2018 - Anonymous Employee in Washington, DC

    Pros

Wonderful people who are down to earth, extremely smart, talented, young, and eager to do some kind of good in the world. Working with funders who are doing incredibly cool things is inspiring. Employees get to work on projects related to education, social justice, conservation, good food, mental health, women & girls, etc. This is a great place to learn about the landscape of philanthropy in the US (there are also some international clients). Great place to build your network/social capital & learn from successful, ambitious, confident women. Great place to learn about project & budget management and client services in general.

    Cons

Pay is below market rate and not enough to make up for often grueling hours. Work/life balance not as advertised. Culture of perfectionism - many things (even sometimes emails) have to go through too many reviewers. Track to promotion is very slow for most, and standards/messaging around promotion are inconsistent & unclear; end-of-year review process is incredibly time-intensive and intense.
