    Pros

    The company provided formal training, benefits, and paid time off. Comparing to other jobs, formal training is always a plus.

    Cons

    When I worked for this company there was poor management that did not provide good guidance on performance on the job.

    Pros

    Great work atmosphere. Great people - fun to be around and really smart. Interesting work. Understood life/work balance. Allowed work from home when needed. Great technology.

    Cons

    Once they were taken over by Nielsen it became very button-down-corporate, and much less fun. The layoffs really demoralized a lot of people - even those that were not laid off. The atmosphere became difficult to be productive in. Maybe new (not former Arbitron employees and not long-time Nielsen emplolyees) would add some fresh air.

    Pros

    Good employee benefits such as healthcare and dental. Free breast pump for expectant mothers.

    Cons

    Working with offshore IT team
    Weak middle management who cannot say no to upper management
    Long hours

    Advice to Management

    Decide if you are an agile shop or waterfall. You cant have short IT cycles and expect the documentation and heavy process.

    Pros

    Arbitron was a great company to work for. Benefits were great and people were wonderful.

    Cons

    Once Arbitron was acquired by Nielsen in 2013. The Nielsen environment is so so different. A lot of fear of down sizing.

    Appreciate the people you have.

    I have been working at Arbitron full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Arbitron (now Nielsen Audio) used to be a great place to work. Since the buy out and significant lay-offs, Team work was great and most people were pretty satisfied.

    Cons

    A significant number of great employees have been terminated. New management seems to be struggling with fitting Arbitron into Nielsen's box of what they think it should be. People are unhappy, overworked and morale is quite low. The culture has changed significantly and a decent work-life balance no longer exists.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your legacy employees.

    good benefits, good salary, good travel opportunities

    Cons

    difficult management, pushed United Way very heavily, cube farm with people who have speaker-phone meetings. never got a review in 1 1/2 years, not even sure of the process.

    Advice to Management

    Let your employees flourish and don't micromanage.

    Pros

    Competitive salary. stable financials. They are imbedded within the industry and so they are likely not going away. Causal dress; but actually some people were very inappropiately dressed in my opinion.

    Cons

    typical call center mentality but a little worse. lots of hidden adgendas will make you feel like you are being left in the dark. Policies are ridiculous. One lady was refused a restroom break and wet herself. Because the company is "in bed" with so many there are a lot of smoke and mirrors. if you are strong thinker stay away, middle management will strip you until you're a zombie. Be ready to learn all the tricks you will need to implement in order to reach their unrealistic quotes. Every call center rep there uses them and so if you don't you will look like an unproductive loser.

    Advice to Management

    Help departments understand the big picture of the organization. Not just with ARB U but with everything. things are too compartmentalized. Middle management's goals seem to strip strong thinkers until they become zombies. Implement a strong career path to prove to employees that they are part of an industry instead of a department run by fear mongers. Important changes take too long to implement.

    Pros

    It pays well, thats about it.

    Cons

    Your unable to take time off at all with out being disciplined. There are drastic changes made every other week. The bonus pay was cut in half at the whim of management , and you must be the life of the party if you wish to reamin an RA . Its not about productivty with this company its more about personality and willingness to handle a great deal of abuse.

    Advice to Management

    Try to value your employees.

    Pros

    Innovative technology and freedom to explore new ideas / applications.

    Cons

    Unsystematic growth, mis-planned strategies and a top down dictatorial work culture by transplanting a top employee from Intel who then brings in his team and brutally downsizes / smothers any hint of dissension in the ranks.

    Frequent fire fighting mode due to unplanned or misplanned engineering schemes.

    Advice to Management

    Every organization is unique and a good manager needs to balance bringing in new ideas / cultures/ consequently new problems or systematically remedying present problems through organizational consensus rather than top down dictates/mandates.

    Petty minded top management will usually get upset for minor irritants and tend to show their clout by bullying people or by showing off their power by demoting or downsizing. This leads to a sense of fear and anxiety for those that need to hold on to their jobs and cause other talented people to just leave with their know how & training.
