I have been working at Arbitron full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Medical Benefits and coworkers are great

    Cons

Management has no clue. Not diverse in their hiring or promotion practices and this is not a good thing when you think about the fact that they are suppose to do unbiased surveys.

    Advice to Management

Nielsen has acquired Arbitron and not surprisingly, although they are a global company, they are just as NON-diverse. The new CEO needs to walk the talk about diversifying their upper management staff. Also, management should not be so quick to dismiss the historical knowledge of older employees that have been with the companies they acquire just to be able to quickly lower their payroll.

  5. "Arbitron was amazing with room to grow, Nielsen is stagnant and low on diversity"

I worked at Arbitron full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Arbitron was an overall good corporation with good benefits. Depending on the department, management was very inclusive and open to their staff. Other departments micromanaged too much causing a 'click' atmosphere leading to promotions with their friends only, even when those friends performed way below standard.

    Cons

No fault to Nielsen for being extremely rigged. You have to be stern to fire 500 people, but the 'who' in structural changes baffled me. Minority inclusion was non existent in upper management promotions and staff that better fit for kept positions were over looked for "friends."

    Advice to Management

Groupthink and lack of diversity hurts your process. Don't promote people who look like you when they are one of your worst options.

I have been working at Arbitron full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Arbitron (now Nielsen Audio) used to be a great place to work. Since the buy out and significant lay-offs, Team work was great and most people were pretty satisfied.

    Cons

A significant number of great employees have been terminated. New management seems to be struggling with fitting Arbitron into Nielsen's box of what they think it should be. People are unhappy, overworked and morale is quite low. The culture has changed significantly and a decent work-life balance no longer exists.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your legacy employees.

    Pros

Good working conditions, flexible hours, great health care

    Cons

This company is no longer in business.

    Advice to Management

Look within to find good project management. Get the developers involved earlier in the process. Don't send someone to school if you're not going to put them on a project.

I worked at Arbitron full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Arbitron was a wonderful place to work that valued its employees and invested in quality employees. Salaries and bonuses were appropriate to experience levels and experienced professionals that Arbitron had. Lots of support and encouragement. Amazing team of people to work with.

    Cons

Sold out to Nielsen and within 44 days of the acquisition, the organization was destroyed. Not sure how they are doing the ratings or meeting any accredidation standards as the organization is half of what it used to be and those that have been brought in as replacements do not measure up to Arbitron's standards.

    Advice to Management

You get what you pay for---if you want high turnover, a lack of work ethic, incompetence and unhappy employees, you are doing just what you need to do. Those that you chose to keep are snakes---beware as they will bite you too!

good benefits, good salary, good travel opportunities

    Cons

difficult management, pushed United Way very heavily, cube farm with people who have speaker-phone meetings. never got a review in 1 1/2 years, not even sure of the process.

    Advice to Management

Let your employees flourish and don't micromanage.
