I worked at Arbor Networks full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very interesting high perf appliance tech

    Cons

No longer a startup. Products aren't in a growth industry, but company was still coming to terms with this in 2014.

    Advice to Management

    Transition to a non-growth mindset.

    Pros

Strong technologies and established leader in some segments. Decent work/life balance.

    Cons

Good work is reserved for the chosen few who get to work on the cool, new, exciting technologies without being encumbered by Agile processes most of the development groups are bound by. This means that few of the many engineers do meaningful work while the other chase agile jellybeans in futile hope.

    Advice to Management

Grow the careers of all your folks, not just the few whom are seen as industry angels.

I have been working at Arbor Networks full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Arbor is full of good, smart people, from top to bottom of the company. The company culture is laid back with an eye towards maintaining a good work-life balance. It is led by mostly engineers who have risen up through the ranks, and has a nice mix of veterans and newer employees, including an active intern program.

Lots of nice perks, such as unlimited vacation time, snack wall, frequent sponsored lunches and tech talks and fun outings, game days, arcade machine, pool table, etc.

Employees are encouraged to incorporate their interests and passions into the job as much as possible, and to feel free to move about to find their best fit within the company. Everyone is expected and trusted to be responsible and doing what is needed for their job.

    Cons

Haven't seen any yet, Arbor has not only survived but flourished through two acquisitions and seems to have found a great fit within its new parent company, Netscout.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work on maintaining a industry lead while growing into new markets and opportunities. Continue to listen to your employees, and communicate to them clearly the 'what' and 'why' of the business. Management does great at constantly looking for ways to improve process and make Arbor an even better place to work at than it already is, if that is possible!

    Pros

Benefits are amazing. You won't find a company with better compensation. The snack wall is always filled. The support staff is always kind and willing to accommodate any need you have.

    Cons

People at Arbor need to learn how to work together. Unfortunately for Arbor, great ideas get debated until execution is no longer possible...people look out for themselves instead of the greater good of the company.

    Advice to Management

Fix the culture that is festering. You need to address the issue of people not wanting to fix the fundamental problems. Get everyone on the same page before launching/acquiring products. Stop focusing on sales so much and address the problems in the products first.

    Pros

The people, the technology, the money, the benefits, the snack rack, the free pop.... and the PEOPLE.

    Cons

Being bought and sold too often, tendency for tunnel vision focus on sales.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it real.

I worked at Arbor Networks as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was an intern soon after the acquisition by Danaher. The engineers were great (seemed pretty satisfied), and the company culture was good too. There was obviously a bit of concern about what would happen as the company got integrated into a bigger company, but people seemed relatively encouraged by what the were seeing (ie good management, little intervention from on-high). Flexible hours and paid well, at least as an intern. The code base was well-documented and code reviews were taken seriously.

    Cons

Most new jobs seemed focused on the D rather than R in R&D, so that may be a positive or negative depending on what you're looking for. But that's probably to be expected given the maturity of the company, so it's not less R than most similar-sized or larger companies.

    Advice to Management

Personally I think agile development is overrated, especially for systems software. While it may be useful for people working on UI, I felt it was being pushed a bit too hard on teams for which agile methods aren't the best fit.

I have been working at Arbor Networks as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work life balance, everyone was very easy to talk to and willing to help you if needed. Onboarding process is pretty solid. Classes are held on different products to familiarize new hires with the various products and how they work.

    Cons

Some of the products that have been around a while have such a large code base initially working with them can be daunting.

I have been working at Arbor Networks full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of really smart people, always willing to help
    Culture feels very startup-esque
    Good pay
    Good work-life balance
    Products make a direct impact

    Cons

Only two main engineering branch locations (though there are quite a few remote workers, too)
Not independently owned - has a parent company (Danaher)

    Advice to Management

Make sure to keep strong hiring standards, even as recruitment needs grow. One strong employee is worth many weaker employees, in terms of work and culture for others.

I have been working at Arbor Networks full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Good work env, flexible hours
    - Employees treated with respect and all treated as adults
    - Many super smart people working on cool technology
    - Autonomy

    Cons

    - As company grows, not as much fun as it used to be
    - Danaher has made it more complex, but they are still fairly hands-off and don't seem to micromanage too much
    - Product futures sometimes uncertain.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep the "small company" culture as much as possible, continue to respect employees and individuals and avoid small decisions that chip away at morale and cultural identity.
