    Pros

They work on lots of large projects across many sectors. Have good corporate events. The London office has a free bar paid for by the partners, 6-8 on thursdays and fridays.

    Cons

I was managed very poorly. I was given a laptop and told to do some training activities on their intranet. Once I'd learnt how to measure drawings on CAD Measure those were the majority of jobs I was given, long and arduous jobs. Learning nothing, just doing the same thing every day, clicking and transferring the measures to Excel. A placement student is there to learn, not to be used as just another cog in the engine.

    Advice to Management

If were in charge of a placement student I would have given the student an accredited QS to work with and learn from on his project. Assisting the qualified QS with his day-to-day jobs to learn by doing to eventually semi-take over the role, as that's what the student is aspiring to become one day.

I have been working at Arcadis UK full-time

    Pros

    1. Good place to work with friendly environment and warm culture.
    2. Flexible working hours and good benefits
    3. Food Cafe and free bar on Wednesday & Thursday evening.
    4. Extra-curricular activities every month.
    5. Great place to start as a senior engineer.

    Cons

    1. Very low pay-rise and lack of opportunity for promotion.
    2. No systematic training plan for graduates.
    3. Poor line management in few departments causing the employees to leave the company.
    4. Most of the technical work is carried out by the company in India leaving the UK employees only with checking works and graduates with administrative work (paperwork, excel and formatting). Not much to learn for junior engineers except helping the senior staff in printing their stuff.
    5. No increment or bonus for obtaining CEng.

    Advice to Management

Prepare a proper training plan for Graduates and introduce increments for gaining Chartered status.

    Pros

Career prospects can be an advantage as it is a global group of companies collaborating. Wide variety of areas of specialisation yet limited opportunities for structural engineers.

    Cons

Career progression and Salary Increase can be quite slow and sometimes not representative of the location you are based in.

    Advice to Management

Improve Salary Reviews and Benefits as these directly reflect to the career progression. Also bonus on successful projects can be an additional benefit.

    Pros

The company had a good structured training scheme with a high level of support taking graduates from their first days through to their APC assessment, as well as good access to a wide range of projects.

    Cons

There was a high level of turnover within the company, with new faces regularly appearing in the the team but also many former colleagues leaving the business.

    Advice to Management

A great deal of focus from the management appeared to on growing the business as quickly as possible and maximising turnover. As it was already one of the largest QS/PM firms in the market, I didn't see the benefit of this. A better aim, perhaps, might have been to focussing on better profit margins, employee satisfaction and staff retention. The emphasis seemed to be 'bigger is better' but this came at an expense.
