I have been working at ArcelorMittal USA (More than 5 years)

    Pros

ArcelorMittal has provided me with a great and diverse experience. Over the last six years I have been provided a number of opportunities to work in different areas and gain a lot of exposure to make me a more, well-rounded professional in my field. While these moves were lateral, the benefit of the development is priceless.
The company offers competitive salaries and total compensation packages. Additionally, I was able to take advantage of their Tuition Reimbursement benefit which is one of the best I have ever seen (up to $24,000 per year!).
I am motivated by my the people I get to work with every day and have maintained a very healthy work-life balance which is very valuable to me.

    Cons

ArcelorMittal is still working to accomplish a single "culture." As the Company is the largest in the world, and with numerous across just the USA, the experience at each facility can be completely different.

I worked at ArcelorMittal USA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the machinery you get to see is nothing short of awesome. I greatly enjoyed learning about the steelmaking process and the ins and outs of the industry

Benefits are some of the best I've ever seen. The 401k match is great - they pay 6% for your first 5% contribution. Quarterly bonuses can be great if the company is making money.

Lot of great people at this company, unfortunately with a company this large there will always be some bad apples.

Locations are good for the most part. Most locations allow for city living or suburbs, whichever you prefer.

    Cons

Definitely a "good old boys" environment. The steel industry is a very old one, and there are definitely people in very high ranking positions just because they had been there a long time

Focus too much on new employees and recruiting, and not retaining employees. This is speaking from someone who did experience being spoiled early on as a new college recruit - which was great, but show appreciation for those that have been with the company 5-10 years as well.

Transfer employees to new departments and locations without involving them in the decision at all. Simply point the finger and say "show up to this new department next week." Does not make employees feel like they have any say in their career path.

    Advice to Management

Take complaints to HR more seriously. If employees are continually leaving while working for a particular manager, there is likely an issue with that particular manager, and not the company as a whole or the employees.

    Pros

    Forward-thinking, community involvement, employment development

    Cons

Union shop overshadows salaried workers; stronger focus on new recruits versus staple employees; minimal advancement opportunities; disparity of income across same job title/function because of new hire vs. internal movement.

    Pros

Lots of low hanging fruit projects, good job stability.

    Cons

Some people hired in don't realize they could be thrown right in as a hourly supervisor, and think they are going to be doing engineering work.

I have been working at ArcelorMittal USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company seems to care about keeping its employees there long term. Unlike other steel companies, doesn't seem to do layoffs. Definitely plenty of work to do if you are motivated.

    Cons

Somewhat outdated mindset which can be expected at a steel company. Some managers (not all) don't seem very flexible in working with changing priorities for younger workers.

    Pros

Very good company to work for, good hourly rate of pay and many benefits. Company of the future in steel making.

    Cons

Possibly shift work and weather conditions. Along with doubles after a note turn. Scheduled that might require me to work holidays. Working a six day work scheduled

I have been working at ArcelorMittal USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ample mobility and opportunity to work different types of jobs. A new employee can easily learn all about how the plant runs from other salaried employees, or from more "front line" experience.

    Cons

Company does not hire enough people to adequately fill roles. Working with the union is a challenge at best and an unessesary roadblock at worst.

    Advice to Management

The company loses a lot of new engineers by immidiatly placing them in the shift manager role. This placement is often revealed last minute, and when accompanied by a short training period causes an extremely frustrating experience.
