I worked at Arch Coal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Provides adequate training for IT folks. Yearly raises & Bonuses even during hard times. They do what they can to retain talent.

    Cons

Coal industry not doing well in general hurting the company's reputation as a secure place to work. Bitterness between IT teams. Lots of politics for a small IT department.

    Advice to Management

The IT organization needs to incorporate standard processes and include all levels of IT in projects and efforts.
Lack of communication between different departments of IT causes resentment and feelings of disrespect. Needs firm IT leadership.

I have been working at Arch Coal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits were decent, People you worked with were good for the most part, Good work/life balance. Casual, laid back environment.

    Cons

IT management is completely inadequate and dysfunctional. They focus on playing CYA instead of fixing the problems that continually occur. Poor communication and cooperation between various IT groups. Many people promoted based on how much the manager likes them rather than how good they are at what they do or their quality of work. No consistency with hiring practices such as interviews, etc. Due to previously mentioned issues, IT has to hire a lot of contractors because the existing employees dont have the ability or skills to fix.

    Advice to Management

Gut IT management. Get rid of entrenched management that have been there for years and seem to be the problem rather than part of the solution. Try to minimize the good old boys club effect.
