The students are very nice and well-behaved. The parents are very involved.

    Cons

The pay is really low, especially compared to what substitute teachers are paid at Seattle Public Schools.

    Pros

Wonderful group of people who are passionate about working in ministry. The admin staff does alot of cross training.

    Cons

My normal hours were weekday, part time but sometimes our help is needed on nights and weekends.

I have been working at Archdiocese of Seattle full-time

    Pros

Benefits are Great. People work with are very dedicated and committed.

More considerate of personal requirements than most businesses. Work life balance is good but lots of after hours actiivty during the school year. Summer is very relaxed.

Very established procedures and structure which is helpful but also sometime restrictive.

Interaction with all elements of the Parish provides a very rich insight into life.

Very supportive of any time required for spiritual life.

Many opportunities to serve the community.

    Cons

    Sometimes the bureaucracy is stifling.

Lots of government regulations which restrict ability to operate efficiently.

Lots of Parish and school politics which requires very delicate communication skills.

Constantly chasing after next donation to keep programs afloat. The Parish needs to be self sufficent as the Parish supports the Archdiocese.

    Too much reinventing the wheel.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the staff and make sure people do not spend too much time at work. Staff is extremely loyal and dedicated and need to consider personal well-being.

Provide clear policies and procedures to assure Parishes are viable.

Take advantage of economies of scale of all Parishes verse letting each Parish sink or swim on their own.

    Pros

Working at the Archdiocese was a great experience. The people who work there are very kind and put in lots of effort into everything they do. You will put in a lot of work, but it is very rewarding.

    Cons

There can be a lot of interoffice politics, but if you stay out of it, you will be fine. Parking was a struggle after certain times.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to new ideas. Lots of great suggestions were put forth, but never even considered because a lot of upper management was very adamant about sticking with old traditions.

    Pros

A wonderful, positive culture for Catholics. Schools are effective and many work hard to support the students and families.

    Cons

Difficult to maintain work/life balance; salary is low and benefits erode every year.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Archdiocese of Seattle full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are great, the best I have seen. For the most part senior leadership is extremely good, and as long as people understand the mission it is a wonderful place.

    Cons

Work life balance is hard, and there is little opportunity for advancement. Horizontal movement is more likely, but still rare.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to increase ownership and advance people or help with development more skills.
