    Pros

It was a great company once upon a time. Lots of potential. At it's peak, the future looked great.

    Cons

Management was timid and ultra conservative. Can't run a pharma company like that. In the end, it can't be a surprise to anyone that the company was a failure.

    Advice to Management

Too little too late. Hope someone sees some value in the very thin pipeline.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Arena Pharmaceuticals has amazing work/life balance. Weekend work was rare and most of the people left by 5PM on weekdays. People were able to work on exciting projects that sometimes randomly die when interest wanes.

After a history of multiple layoffs, the remaining people these last few years were very friendly, talented colleagues who knew how to get stuff done. Unfortunately, this made climbing up the career ladder incredibly difficult as the company stagnated in size.

    Cons

A whole lot of what if's regarding business decisions made by the executive team. What if Arena didn't partner with Eisai and instead partnered with a company who had a proven record of building market demand? What if Arena decided to park lorcaserin instead of etrasimod and we were the first to market with a S1P1 agonist?

    Advice to Management

There's a lot of valuable IP at Arena. It shouldn't be too difficult to turn things around once phase 2 data comes out.

I have been working at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have been employed by Arena for more than a decade, I was given the opportunity to work from early discover projects through new drug applications. Benefits are good. The scientific team was exceptional.

    Cons

Poor management allowed the copy to flounder. The salary was modest compared to industrial standards, Bonus structure was poor..

    Advice to Management

The management must act in a timely manner. There is also a need for transparency. Management must be able to listen to ideas from the scientists.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

some very capable and knowledgeable scientists work here
    benefits are ok

    Cons

poor management decisions and constant waffling are driving the company into the ground
VP level management seem incapable of making a timely decision

    Advice to Management

consider a few VP and Director level layoffs instead of so many "worker bees" during the next layoff

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Company finds good people to work there. Various events keep the morale at bay. Can take time away to workout or walk (free the mind a bit).

    Cons

Various departments are not properly staffed and have poor oversight. AD and QA are overlooked by upper management and need to replace department heads with better people.

    Advice to Management

Look at your entire org chart and be sure to look past the cover-ups made by department heads and talk to the "workers"

"Laid back company with a dreary, stagnant work environment"

I have been working at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Arena offers a great relaxed atmosphere and doesn't interfere with my personal life. The stress level is very low and management is usually pretty understanding of "life-matters" (doctors appts, vacation time use, etc.). Freedom to come in, take lunch, and leave when you want, as long as you get 40 hours/week in and get your work done. Benefits are decent, but could be with a better healthcare network.

    Cons

The environment at Arena is awful. It is very dreary, and most employees keep to themselves so there is not too much interaction which makes for a very sad, depressing day. The pay is low compared to other bio-tech companies in the area, and there is absolutely NO room for employee growth, both in level of position, and salary. There are no incentives and no bonuses which also contributes to the sad, dreary work environment. The responsibilities and work load held among non-management employees is pretty much equal which makes the salary differences hard to understand. Harder working employees should be rewarded, but never are.

    Advice to Management

Create more opportunities for employee growth and offer your employees bonuses, reasons as to why we should want to stay working here. Stop offering employees a ridiculous amount of stock options as a "raise" and instead give them a bonus or something of immediate value. Make the salary/position level of employees, match their responsibility load. Create a more viable work environment with other fun company wide events.
