I have been working at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Dynamic, smart, energetic, collaborative team! I was not sure what to expect coming into a company with such a long history and so many changes, but so glad I did. The new team is delivering clinical results on the world class GPCR research that Arena was always known for. Happy to be part of it!

    Cons

    Traffic and location are tough.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Even though it's not a start-up, it feels like one. It's dynamic, fast-pace, challenging yet rewarding. Some good progressive benefits, you can feel the energy - pretty exciting place to be right now! Great bunch to work with, too.

    Cons

Because of all the change over the last year, there is much movement and work to get done - need more hands on deck.

I have been working at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Great team of people dedicated to improving patient lives.
Strong benefits and compensation offerings - especially given the fact it's a smaller company.
If you want to learn and be involved in a lot of different aspects of drug development, it's a great company!
Management team is very accessible - CEO knows everyone's name and is available to talk to anyone on the team.

    Cons

Arena is a fast-paced, high-energy environment with a strong entrepreneurial mind-set so it may not be a good fit for those seeking a job that is highly-structured. It's not a 9-5 culture but there is flexibility with hours and understanding that people have families/lives outside of work.

    Pros

It was a great company once upon a time. Lots of potential. At it's peak, the future looked great.

    Cons

Management was timid and ultra conservative. Can't run a pharma company like that. In the end, it can't be a surprise to anyone that the company was a failure.

    Advice to Management

Too little too late. Hope someone sees some value in the very thin pipeline.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Arena Pharmaceuticals has amazing work/life balance. Weekend work was rare and most of the people left by 5PM on weekdays. People were able to work on exciting projects that sometimes randomly die when interest wanes.

After a history of multiple layoffs, the remaining people these last few years were very friendly, talented colleagues who knew how to get stuff done. Unfortunately, this made climbing up the career ladder incredibly difficult as the company stagnated in size.

    Cons

A whole lot of what if's regarding business decisions made by the executive team. What if Arena didn't partner with Eisai and instead partnered with a company who had a proven record of building market demand? What if Arena decided to park lorcaserin instead of etrasimod and we were the first to market with a S1P1 agonist?

    Advice to Management

There's a lot of valuable IP at Arena. It shouldn't be too difficult to turn things around once phase 2 data comes out.
