I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It was a great company once upon a time. Lots of potential. At it's peak, the future looked great.

    Cons

Management was timid and ultra conservative. Can't run a pharma company like that. In the end, it can't be a surprise to anyone that the company was a failure.

    Advice to Management

Too little too late. Hope someone sees some value in the very thin pipeline.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

some very capable and knowledgeable scientists work here
    benefits are ok

    Cons

poor management decisions and constant waffling are driving the company into the ground
VP level management seem incapable of making a timely decision

    Advice to Management

consider a few VP and Director level layoffs instead of so many "worker bees" during the next layoff

    Pros

Great benefits and the salaries are decent

    Cons

Stock price continuing downward spiral. Multiple large layoffs and likely more to come.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive benefits and salary. The workplace was mostly low stress and friendly. There were regular group happy hours and holiday parties.

    Cons

Main drug in the market is not doing well, so not much revenue. Seems like there is more management than workers creating value. Not much opportunity for career growth from within.

    Advice to Management

Management did not seem interested in suggestions from workers in the trenches in how to improve the company. Management often on whim commits time, energy and resources on projects to later abandon without explanation.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Company provides competitive pay and decent benefits. Great location within Sorrento Valley in San Diego, just minutes from La Jolla.

    Cons

Company has never been profitable and experienced two major layoffs. Senior executives were receiving 45% raises while laying off half the workforce. Arena employees didn't receive any raises for three years during this time. Some employees who are in charge tend to frown upon other employees who have come from big pharma, the ones who actually know the industry. A privileged few are somehow able to take unlimited vacation time.

    Advice to Management

Stop lining your pockets at the expense of your employees' jobs.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The best benefits of any company in the San Diego area. A few nice people to work with who know what needs to be done.

    Cons

The management and project teams did not move projects forward in a timely manner. There was a deplorable lack of decision making that kept everyone waiting for work to be done. The associates and a handful of key (i.e. popular) lab heads operated at a low capacity but were falsely regarded highly by upper management. As a result of the lack of interest in their career development, associates became uninterested and lacked motivation. In the end, the work environment became depressing and unbearable. Any individual with skill or talent slowly left the company for better opportunities.

I worked at Arena Pharmaceuticals as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good employee stock purchase plan. There used to be a lot of great team building, offsite events. Benefits were above average.

    Cons

Low pay and too many cutbacks on benefits. The amount of work was not consistent. Long meetings with no decisions being made.

    Advice to Management

Be more involved with your employees.
