I have been working at Argo Group

    Pros

There are many smart people that work here. They have a great charitable donation matching program.

    Cons

Several employees were laid off last year, but it wasn't a bad year. There is a sense of politicking and favoritism with upper management.

I worked at Argo Group for more than 3 years

    Pros

People! I really enjoyed all my co-workers and my direct boss. My boss was the most knowledgeable person regarding Commercial Insurance I've ever known.

    Cons

As stated before, this company is a playground for exec's. As long as you're in the good graces of the CEO and CFO you're fine. When you're out, you're out. Some of the business acquisitions appear to be nothing more than just finding a cool international place to open an office. Upper Management has a 3 to 4 year life cycle. You notice all exec's are within 2 years of hire. Enjoy being the cool kids until you get sideways with Mark.

I worked at Argo Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There were some really quality people to work with at the staff and lower management level. The benefits are pretty good for the size of the company. Beautiful office in downtown San Antonio.

    Cons

Benefits and pay are behind other insurance companies in town. Upper management is cutthroat and ruthless with their own employees. Employees are treated as disposable. Culture overall does not match the core values and is fairly toxic. Pay increases only occur every other year.

I worked at Argo Group full-time

    Pros

Coffee machine on each floor and free soda on the main floor. There was an effort to make each one of their offices look nice and the same.

    Cons

Horrible management that has breed a culture of not my fault. There are huge silos built into the company that prevent any real work from getting done. Management looks for a fall person every time something goes wrong so everyone is busy trying to say it is not their fault so they don't get blamed. This greatly increases the time to resolution of IT issues. They do not hold to their core values, don't give raises, act like bonuses (which are promised when your hired) were like moving a mountain to get for you and they are very small. If you manage people at Argo upper management will go around you and manage your people for you then expect you to deal with the bad reviews and other such bad news with the expectations that you own it like you made the decision. A classic sign that management as a whole has trust issues. Why would you hire someone if you did not trust them? The culture is designed around top down decision making without any input from the end users and front line technical support personnel. If you attempt to share your opinion or thoughts on a project and propose anything other than what upper management has come up with you will be frowned upon and eventually reprimanded in some way. Benefits are not great. They have a separate prescription plan that is a rider on their insurance and they pretty much stop you from getting many meds and of course you always have to stay on top of what is approved in that area. They also have a Wellness program that it seems is designed to make the company money. The Wellness program is a joke all you have to do is at minimum take a phone call each quarter so it is really not designed to help you get well rather like a cable company the hope I think is you will not participate so they can earn $30 dollars a paycheck per a person on your insurance. So expect if you have dependents that they will have to jump through the hoops as well or get charged; each $60 a month. Time off is comparable to most other companies, except for the fact that many of the managers and project managers reserve the right to deny your request for time off as they see fit even though you do not directly report to them. This happens during high times of insurance policy traffic and renewals and when IT projects are coming due. The funny thing about the projects is they are usually delayed and not on time any way. Partial the fault of Argo and partially they fault of the Vendor they work with on their new insurance and claims management software.

    I worked at Argo Group

    Pros

Decent benefits, nice offices. Paid parking.

    Cons

Argo Group has a toxic if not bankrupt corporate culture. Upper management leaves a lot to be desired, and does not listen to or respect the middle management, who are exceptionally talented and capable. Cronyism runs rampant. No connection between how people are compensated and the value that they provide. Company values are words painted on the sides of the walls; not believed by anyone, certainly not practiced or demonstrated by upper management. It starts at the top with the CEO, and is not likely to change.

I have been working at Argo Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible schedule, they throw parties and go all out. Liquor, cigars, food, the works decent time off policy. decent lower management.

    Cons

Compensation, Nepotism, Politics, selfish culture, hardly any procedures in place. Upper management is very difficult to please. the lower managers mostly are good, but they cant do much because of the higher management

I worked at Argo Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Some truly wonderful people work for Argo. Salary and benefits decent. Great picnics, potlucks and parties.

    Cons

Many positions were outsourced to India. Also, if you're over 50, don't bother applying. If your immediate superior isn't the greatest at currying favor with upper management, start looking for something else.

I worked at Argo Group full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The salary and benefit package was equal to other insurance companies but not as good as it was two years ago.

    Cons

Upper management places no value on their employees. In the past year the claims department has had countless people leave due to the work environment. Upper management has no respect for the employees opinions. Company is outsourcing jobs to India. They are part of the employment crisis in the US.
