I have been working at Argus Research Company full-time

    Pros

Nice 'core' group 6-7 people who come into the office regularly, take the job seriously, work hard and are the utmost professionals.

    Cons

The other 20-30 employees are never seen as they 'work' from home. Management lacks the vision and skillset to manage a changing business model. No employee/management accountability at any level. Third-world office conditions. Lack of operational support. Declining research quality as workload becomes burdensome.

Argus prides itself on 'independent' research. I think it's important to point out that by independent, they mean no other company in the equity research business does it quite like Argus....I'm an employee of the firm and don't utilize the research for my own investment portfolio even as I obtain it for free. There is very little value-added research being provided by the firm. If it wasn't for such a nice group of people (hand-chosen) than John Eade would be long gone as CEO of the firm as he has ran once celebrated research firm into the ground. It really is a shame, as many employees have dedicated themselves to the firm and providing research to clients. When it comes time for them to retire, they will have nothing to show for it. A disappointment to say the least.

    Advice to Management

Fix what the core areas of your business before trying to expand into new verticals. There is a lack of resources and you cannot pursue every potential revenue opportunity without sacrificing the quality of the research. Quality>Quanity

    Pros

Work/ life balance, flexibility to WFH, Limited oversight. Mostly quant based research process allows for canned and limited commentary requirements. Once the process is understood, the workflow is repetitive and simple.

    Cons

"Work/life" balance constantly cited - and ultimately used a keep compensation low. If you want to work harder and earn more, that option is not there. Company lacks long term strategic vision as to how their core business is evolving and ownership has an unrealistic view of the co.s market position and ultimate value.

    Advice to Management

IMO, Significant overhaul required at the top. The research business has changed over the past 40 years - strategy needs to reflect that. "Because we've always done it this way" is typically not a sustainable model for future growth.

I worked at Argus Research Company as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

People are honest. kind and helpful from assistants to top management.
The company's business is clearly set and everybody has his role well defined within the company.
Analysts are extremely prepared and have a detailed knowledge of the industries they cover and also very opened to take time out of their work to teach and train you on the job.
The company's president is a masterpiece of professional figure, who loves his company and extremely motivated.
I have worked directly with him, with my supervisor and with other analysts to get a thorough view of the company's business and of the market, and for an intern that's extremely important.
Working hours are really good, in line with market hours, really intense though and that's a pros since it makes you being concentrated on your work.

    Cons

The company's culture has roots distant in time so you need to adapt to their culture to be part of "the family".
Everybody works hard, so that motivates you to do the same. Since the team is made up of senior analysts that covers specific industries, the teamwork is not the main element, but you have the opportunity to share your work with each of them on one-to-one projects and specific assignments.

    Advice to Management

For the little time I spent there, I would encourage the management to expand the business as they have the tools and the opportunity to do that, also growing in number as working people.

I worked at Argus Research Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Predictable but backward looking 'safe' product. Good for trust departments to paper their decisions. Little risk. Good place to start your career but don't get stuck there.

    Cons

No sales support. No access to senior management. No infrastructure. No advancement. Low pay. Shrinking client base. Stay away unless you are desperate or need a starter job.

    Advice to Management

Decide upon the long term goals of the company. Get that new website. Hire a competent sales professional. Put more process in place that links the product to the sales team.
