I worked at Arizona Daily Star full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay when you make your goals

    Cons

Management is always "inventing" new products to sell and making sales staff push them onto clients who may not have any use for it. They still believe Newspaper is the greatest advertising vehicle even.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring management from within. My manager had been there over 25 years. A lot has changed in the media world in that time.

I have been working at Arizona Daily Star as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Minimal supervision, contractor receives tips from subscribers, good for night owls and graveyard people

    Cons

While you only make 7-29.25 cents per paper successfully delivered to employer, they charge you 4.50 for each redelivery, regardless of the reason. They demand 100 percent customer satisfaction. They often short you on payday, leaving off tips or not crediting you appropriately. The management refuses to take responsibility for errors that they make. Often times the other papers you are required to deliver for a lesser rate, do not arrive on time, sometimes (at least a couple of times a month) they don't come at all, which results in customer complaints and they count against your CPM (complaints per million) and if you are over 1 percent they threaten your contract.

    Advice to Management

Don't sell out good contractors for cheaper bidders.

I worked at Arizona Daily Star full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a dynamic newsroom with lots of challenges. Co-workers are mostly awesome to work with and most are passionate about what they do. It's hard to be bored there.

    Cons

Management treats rank-and-file employees like chopped liver. Morale was pretty bad by the time I left the company. Management style is authoritarian. Sometimes they come up with pretty wacky ideas.

    Advice to Management

We know you're scared about the state of newspapers — and ultimately your own jobs — but that doesn't mean you should take it out on your underlings. Try listening to people in the trenches.

I worked at Arizona Daily Star as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Hours, if you have a day-job/school or kids

    Cons

Pay is very low, you have to buy your own supplies, gas, vehicle wear-and-tear, and pay for anything that happens to the paper after you throw it. Management is difficult, snarky, unprofessional and petty. Sexual harassment and drug abuse is common in the ware houses.

This is a 7-day-a-week job, unless you get someone to sub your route - for which you're still financially responsible for any mistakes they make.

    Advice to Management

Newspapers are a dying business that will crash when its customers (90% non-computer literate senior citizens) pass away. You can't serve your customers by mistreating your contractors (who should be employees).
