I have been working at Arizona Department of Corrections full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are opportunities for leadership in many different fields within the Department, including finance, human resources, facilities, occupational health, etc. Every job change within the agency makes you more valuable and because you're in the state personnel system, all your accrued time and benefits stay with you.

    Cons

The higher you go in the organization, the more you are affected by the state political winds. You need to pay careful attention to the organization's strategic direction and align yourself to it as much as possible

    Advice to Management

Value the thoughts and ideas of your co-workers and subordinates because they are golden. The current philosophical change, around the John Bernard book "Government That Works" will lead the Department in a strong direction. Be ready to go along with that.

    Pros

Benifits , decent pay. Most of the people and supervisors are pretty good.

    Cons

High stress sometimes dangerous. Usually long commute. Line staff treated unfairly, lots of favoritism.

    Advice to Management

    None

I worked at Arizona Department of Corrections full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working for Central office: Great manager, team worked well together, processes in place, very streamlined yet open to improvement. Good feedback from immediate supervisor.

    Cons

If you were outside of HR, things were really slow to change. Politics in play throughout, it was hard to get to know some upper management because of the old school top-down hierarchy. Your manager will make or break you in a lot of areas; if they loved you, you were good for life.

    Advice to Management

Would like to see shedding of 'that's how it's always been done' a little more rapidly. People who have been there for too long or know how to play the game will bring down any new ideas or new talent that comes in.

I have been working at Arizona Department of Corrections full-time

    Pros

Moderate pay incentive, decent medical dental and vision plan, job security due to high turn over rate, college tuition when available, always opening available to promote.

    Cons

Staff come and go like there's a revolving door, constantly understaffed (250+ inmate to 1 staff, no backup officer (often work alone), no raise in 10 years, pension plan bumped up from 20 -25 years, sick days available (just try to use them). Management and Upper Chain of command alway complaining about something, rarely a good word to say, leading to poor moral. Those in charge refuse to let go of dinosaur thinking and methods because thats the way they learned it. They maintain control over staff using fear tactics.

    Advice to Management

Take some garbage off the plate for a change. Everyone likes to add it to suck up to their up line supervisors and then the next in charge who shows up at the door is afraid to remove it. You are killing your staff by having them perform multiple post and enforcing constant motion. Also stop searching the staff right in front of the inmates, the

I have been working at Arizona Department of Corrections (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits, lots of sick time and vacation time

    Cons

Can't actually use sick time without risking your job, negative environment, in a constant state of awareness for personal and fellow officers safety due to over crowding and under staffing, has not been a pay increase for officers in over 10 years, much of the supervisory staff is either hostile, under qualified, or power mad, routinely penalized for using the sick time that is necessary and lose pay when your supervisors arbitrarily deny your sick time based on their own whim

    Advice to Management

Give your employees a raise, treat them like human beings
