I have been working at Arizona Department of Environmental Quality full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I come to work everyday to support engineers and scientists who are protecting our State from pollution - how awesome is that?

    Cons

Few opportunities for flex time, all work/no play, but fantastic benefits/pension

    Pros

Great coworkers, Great Benefits, chill environment

    Cons

Not enough useful training geared towards the actual job.

    Advice to Management

Do more focus based training for employees and stop talking about what's value added to the organization, and you don't live by it.

I have been working at Arizona Department of Environmental Quality full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The only pros are some of the workers here and covered parking garage.

    Cons

Where to start, management-absolutely spineless! This place operates on the fear method so no one wants to speak up cause if you do your marked for termination. Managers can't even delegate jobs to the employees for projects, expects same old work horses to keep everything going while others stand around doing nothing. Pay-pay is not even comparable to other agencies where you do the same job or possibly less and get paid more. No raises, some senior staff have been here 10+ years with no raise or cola. This place is hard pressed to keep any quality employees, most get experience and run like Forrest Gump. If working hard and doing your best are your thing don't apply here, they don't care, just want a mindless drone that will stay forever. If you do decide to leave you'll be treated poorly till your gone. Most would be better off applying where Happy Meals are served at least right up front you know you'll be working for a clown, instead of finding out later.

    Advice to Management

Flush them out and put people that have credentials and actual experience in the field they manage.

    Cons

Salary , angry customers , working outside, expected to do too much and be perfect for very little pay .

    Advice to Management

Management needs to take better care of its employees. Employees are grossly underpaid but expected to do way too much.

    Pros

The Agency is constantly trying to improve and become more efficient, employees are passionate as well and the environment is real friendly

I worked at Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (More than a year)

    Pros

Great state medical benefits, good pension if you can afford the withdrawal each paycheck.

    Cons

Mistrust of management. Management pushes axioms to employees, but don't follow them. Many meetings are a waste of time, preventing you from doing your job.

    Advice to Management

Cut back on unnecessary meetings. Practice what you preach to employees to build trust.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Arizona Department of Environmental Quality full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Protecting Arizona's environment and public health.
    A pension system, rather than a 401k.
    A merit-based bonus system.

    Cons

Despite the constant lip service they’ve paid to Lean Management principles and bottom-up problem-solving, ADEQ has become far more autocratic during the tenure of Henry Darwin and Misael Cabreras.
Institutional knowledge is no longer valued, and many long term employees feel that they’re being targeted for replacement.
In the name of streamlining the department, internal processes have been modified so heavily that they're becoming overly bureaucratic again.

    Advice to Management

    Let Lean Management work.
Requiring each employee to produce a particular number of process improvement ideas per quarter is not the same as responding when an employee spontaneously suggests a way to improve the system.

    Cons

    IT manager was untrustworthy.
    No room for advancement.
    Some nights and weekends.

    Advice to Management

Get a new IT manager. That is a great shop to work at.
