    Pros

You have a good home/work separation. Great benefits and rewarding work. Great people to work with, very helpful management. If you like helping people, this is a great place to start a career

    Cons

bureaucratic issues can arise and are not easily dealt with. The pay is not the best, but lots of upward movement. Loads of paperwork and sometimes hostile clients. Be prepared for any and all walks of life

    Advice to Management

Provide praise, a raise, and the help stays

I worked at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None. Place was a hell hole. Bacon was decent, though.

    Cons

I worked for DYS inside DHS for 2 years. It was hell on earth. Ethical violations all over the place. You point them out, you become a target. I became so physically ill and anxious I would cry on my way in to work. Not worth it. Don't do it to yourself

    Advice to Management

    Less politics, more work.

I have been working at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The flexibility is nice to have. The pay is decent.

    Cons

If you work in DCFS, not DCO you will work lots of overtime, will not see your friends or family, supervisors are hand picked by a buddy system, most supervisors are not qualified for the job title. NO SUPPORT from the department. If you are not a brown nose and a " yes" person you will be targeted by supervisors and pull through " ****". You will be treated with NO respect by supervisors, & treated as though you are below their feet. If you have a question about policy, you will receive a smart*** remark and eyes rolled at you. I would not suggest this job for anyone who has any dignity or respect for themselves. That being said I'm quitting after 3 yrs of living in ****. NO AMOUNT OF MONEY is worth the **** you will go through on this job.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to stop hiring their buddies and actually hire people who are qualified and professional.

I have been working at Arkansas DHS full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1. Job stability

    2. Great team of people to work with.

    3. Work hours are flexible when needed.

    4. Senior leaders are helpful and open to change when needed.

    Cons

    1. Average State of Arkansas employee makes 30% less in salary than private sector.

    2. High turn over rate for 1-2 year employees due to salary gap to private sector.

    3. No probability of moving up the pay-scale that the State of Arkansas has published for their positions.

    4. 0% chance of getting a raise in your current position.

    5. Only way to get a pay increase is to move/shift to another position.

    6. Downtown location is located in old antiquated buildings desperately in need of renovation.

    7. Downtown location has a very crowded work environment.

    8. Horribly slow response to IT needs when it comes to ordering.

    Advice to Management

Bring wages to at least the minimum of what private the sector pays for the same position. The State of Arkansas has a published pay-scale by years of employment that isn't used. use the pay-scale to reward your employees for year of dedicated service to the State of Arkansas.

I worked at Arkansas DHS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people on the front lines, clerical, and the "workers" were mostly awesome individuals who actually cared about the people they served.

    Cons

The upper management people were self obsessed for the most part. Of the 12-15 with whom I interacted, only two behaved as if they actually cared about any thing or any one (except their own pay day). The work load is tremendous and they need to manage it as if it were a for profit enterprise.

    Advice to Management

Get a clue. Go back and see what is going on at the worker's level. Get some competent people who care about efficiency.
