All the benefits you can hope for, growth can be tough.

    Pros

The benefits, pension, health insurance, remote work option, flexible spending account, tuition reimbursement, etc. For the most part, you stick to your schedule, hours, workload, and everyone understands that. You have opportunities for self-improvement and leadership tracks offered by the County.

    Cons

Harder to grow within some departments, management does their best to move you within, but positions can be limited and you hit a ceiling. Often best to move across departments and get an increase in pay but that may not be the best option if you have a career path in mind. Also, many of the people who work in Arlington don't seem to live in Arlington because of the cost of living, so many people are forced to travel in from other parts of the DC metro/NoVa areas.

I am astounded the place is still standing

    May 4, 2021 - Emergency Communications Technician

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great coworkers, wealthy county with a lot of resources and a lot of shiny toys. Solid schedule and great opportunities for overtime (because nobody works there).

    Cons

The management of the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) are by far the worst, most clueless set of folks I have ever met. Used to be terrific center that they drove straight into the ground due to mismanagement and sheer incompetence. The pay is insufficient to live on in the county or DC, most folks live far away in MD or VA and have to commute well over an hour to get in. Zero upward mobility unless you're a "yes man". The culture is overwhelmingly negative and management seems incapable of addressing it or making any substantive changes for their employees. The culture drives good new folks away, and is forcing old people to leave. So much attrition that there's barely anyone with experience in the ECC now. There's so few staff, they are forced to bring in police and firefighters in to take our spots. Pretty insulting to staff because they get paid $20-30 more an hour than the actual dispatcher sitting next to them and they do less work than the dispatchers. Because there's no staff you're constantly taking 9-1-1 calls without a break. Don't even get me started on how they responded to COVID. The place is circling the drain...
