I have been working at Arlington Public Schools part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Helping families in the community with whatever transportation problems they may have. Providing excellent information and guidance to every call the comes in.

    Cons

Listening to complaints about our drivers. We want everyone to be satisfied with us and it does not feel good when we fail to do so.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what your employees have to say

    Pros

Very professional and smart staff at all levels; most administrators have many years of experience; the schools are well appointed and well supplied ... many amenities

    Cons

None, really; anything I ever complained about was minor and the administration always did its best to address the problem or fix it

    Advice to Management

Keep up the fine support for teachers ... thanks for not strapping us with so much extra conferencing and training, esp since most of us are well seasoned

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Good entry level training Program opportunities

    Cons

Principals do not collaborate between schools to use the same curriculum. New curriculum is constantly being tested out on classes only to then be thrown away. This makes it extremely time consuming and difficult on teachers. In the lower preforming schools much of the classroom teachers time is spent testing the students.

I worked at Arlington Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great school system in a great location.

    Cons

No equity. AP and IB students are treated with much more significance than others (ELL and those with IEPs). Very little support for Special Education teachers

    Pros

Teachers you assist are more helpful and provide you with feedback than your supervisor.

    Cons

Little communication between supervisor and some "lead" teachers. Low pay for Teacher Assistants.

    Advice to Management

Communicate more with your team. Respect your team.

I have been working at Arlington Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is decent and the people are really nice. They will give you as much PD as you want and will reimburse you for most big ticket items with receipts.

    Cons

Too much testing of the kids and awful dental benefits. The district needs to realize children are more then data.

    Advice to Management

Stop testing the kids all the time!! IA's take a good two weeks away from instruction each quarter!!

I have been working at Arlington Public Schools full-time

    Pros

    1. The pay is GREAT if you're a mid-career educator.
    2. Opportunity to showcase your skills
    3. The kids are generally great
    4. Administration (in my experience) is fair.

    Cons

    1. Not all buildings are in great condition
    2. Overcrowding
    3. Management seems to be making things up as they go along in some areas
    4. Not enough staff to handle the increasing workload due to increased enrollment
    5. The parents can be a bit much at times in some parts of the county

    Advice to Management

Be sure your employees know they are valued. Provide additional opportunities for advancement. Keep our salaries competitive with other area counties. Keep asking for educator input on new initiatives.

I have been working at Arlington Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Supportive County
    - Manageable size of county allows for more personalized trainings & instruction
    - Supportive Community outside of school allows for greater support
    - PLC (Professional Learning Community) is definitely a bonus

    Cons

    - Growing! Increasing size of county includes a good amount of growing pains that continue to be an issue

Honestly, other than that, the cons are that of regular schools. Overall, a wonderful county to work for, especially for first year teachers.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps increase the amount of minority teachers that are employed, as that is an experience that children growing up in Modern America need to experience.

Along with that, add more minority-led groups in unions such as the AEA: Arlington Education Association.

    Cons

With only 194 days you have a lot off down time with out pay! but you get holidays off.

    Advice to Management

not much run at the top.
