I have been working at Artsy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Have made the most of big leadership changes recently to turn the ship in a new, promising direction. Continue to make great hires who feel like they're upping the game. Doubling down on long term strengths of Artsy like transparency and collaboration, but amplifying with speed and focus. Feels like we're in the best position yet to actually do what we came to do.

    Cons

Big strategic shifts take work, so next year isn't going to be easy. Pressure to increase operating leverage may put even more pressure on current people. Feels like this is the newest iteration of a few years of change, which can be exhausting. A bit nervous that strategic change will lead to cultural change — I don't want us to lose the magic of a great community.

I have been working at Artsy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-I've never felt more supported as a manager. Great collaborative, supportive, positive work environment where I feel like I can bring my full self to work everyday. -Incredible people operations team, especially for the size of the company. Great support for managers and thoughtful company-wide approach to things like feedback, reviews, compensation, benefits, etc. -Strategic thinkers at all levels. Previous companies...

    Cons

Highly collaborative environment can sometimes lead to a decision-by-consensus process that keeps teams from moving as fast as they could. We're aware of the challenge though and working on it!

    Advice to Management

As we focus more on growth and moving quickly, leadership still needs to make sure they have enough time, as a team and personally, to practice mindfulness and ethical decision making. Big tech companies are often revered for their rapid growth, 10Xing revenue, etc, but we are seeing the downsides of that now (eg. Facebook essentially accidentally breaking our democracy). Let's make sure not to lose the things that make...

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Artsy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Extremely collaborative -People are kind and thoughtful, even in their disagreements -HR/People Ops cares about and is available to employees -Work/Life balance is respected and encouraged -Happy, calm, positive work space with nice setting/food/etc (nice perks) -Leadership treats all with respect -People who work there are passionate and smart and nice (a rare combo)

    Cons

-Because of the democratic and thoughtful nature of the roles/teams and company values, it can take a long time for decisions to be made and sometimes feels like conversations go in circles and have too many voices/stakeholders which stops things from moving forward -There were not a lot of people/perspectives from outside of the art world when I was there so sometimes felt like people were out of touch with general...

    Advice to Management

-Continue to clearly communicate and be transparent as the company grows and changes -Encourage various teams and business lines to understand the other areas of the business and find ways to work together or at least see all pieces as part of the whole -Empower leaders (and those growing into positions of leadership) to be able to make faster and more concrete decisions and then carry them out once the thoughtful processes...

I have been working at Artsy full-time for more than a year

I have been working at Artsy full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Artsy takes hiring very seriously. It's a long process, but also a thoughtful one that pays off—there's no dead weight here. There's a lot of cross-functional collaboration and transparency, and since everyone is good at their job, this makes Artsy a particularly valuable place to work. Being an EA, I see the inner workings of all departments, and it's a great education.

    Cons

There is a strong focus on considering everyone's opinion—which of course is good, but too much of this can delay decision making. Sometimes I want the circle to close faster than it does.

    Advice to Management

Artsy isn't perfect, no employer is but the leadership here is flexible in general, receptive to feedback and willing to engage in dialogue when something isn't working, which has resulted in an overall sense of trust. Don't ever lose that!

I have been working at Artsy full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Getting the chance to work and interact with incredibly intelligent, creative, NICE people from different educational backgrounds every day is definitely a unique experience! Considering the type of difficult "personalities" that fill the Art business in NY today (and having worked in both galleries and auction houses) I can safely say that Artsy is a rarity. On my first day i was greeted by the CEO who introduced himself...

I worked at Artsy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great co-workers, healthy work environment, flexible time off, great benefits. On the design side, you will probably work with a good manager or project manager and your projects will have breathing room and set on a decent schedule.

    Cons

Personally I felt at a pigeonhold and didn't really have room to grow/wasn't really fostered well. Didn't always get interesting projects. Partly due to a lot of management changes over time, there was a big gap where I didn't feel like I was a part of any longterm plan. As I departed, things have changed, management has changed, and plans were under way with more clear growth projections/career growth on both the individual...

    I worked at Artsy full-time

    Pros

Admittedly great, perk-filled work culture. Beautiful office. Bright co-workers. Enthusiastic team and company-wide energy.

    Cons

Recent budget cuts and layoffs should give pause. Like most start-ups, Artsy has a set of ideals and values that are admirable. But as the company must contend with the needs of its investors, will it sacrifice those same values? It is easy to envision the excellent company culture being eroded by the demands of the bottom line. Think before drinking the Kool-Aid.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and open as the company continues to evolve in order to meet financial realities.

    Cons

The art world is filled with somewhat unpredictable clients who can have a hard time understanding technology and online marketplaces as a necessary business cost.

    Advice to Management

Continue listening to the expertise and feedback from your various teams and investing in your engineering and product. Keep us focused on our mission to expand the art market by working to show more art and artists on the platform, and integrity toward that goal will keep us as the main resource for discovery.
