I have been working at Asce full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

ASCE is a GREAT employer. I've worked in the capacity of representative for several Customer Service Organization and it was hard work listening to complaints all day with no thanks from the management of a job well done. The management team that I currently have is very supportive. Granted, it's no walk in park with answering calls, chats, email, but the entire customer service team works together to get things done even when other areas within the organization does not. The benefits are great, and the customer service management team comes up with some ingenious ways to make the job better for everyone.

    Cons

    1. Pay higher wages.
    2. There are a couple of staff members that would probably be better served to look for employment elsewhere. They always have something negative to say when they don't agree with policies.
    3. Genuinely great staff through-out the organization.
    4. Can be a career if you have the time to wait out higher management to move up the ladder.
    5. Don't always keep internal staff abreast of open positions and too quick to hire from the outside.

    Advice to Management

Way too many Directors & Above. Might want to think about reducing that number by not replacing them as they leave.

    Pros

Very casual environment on that floor. Plenty of conversations. Lots of different food trucks stop by.

    Cons

Some of the managers can be pretty strict and demanding. No matter what you do it will never be quite good enough. Those who don't do well under criticism need not apply.

    I worked at Asce full-time

    Pros

This job has the potential to be a great place to work if it werent' for the mgmt that has been hanging around too long. Benefits are good and the HR does try to have some fun activites for employes.

    Cons

Uper management, no ability to move up if your boss doesn't want you to leave, some areas are really horrible about work life balance, HR does not know what the word confidentiality mean, and the pay raises are tiny and based on how much your boss likes or doesn't like you

    Advice to Management

Clean out those who have been around too long and actually listen to what employees are saying...how about treating like value employee and not like they are you personel slaves

I have been working at Asce full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

ASCE is the BEST employer I've ever worked for, and I've worked for many. The leadership is supportive, the benefits are great, and the staff accomplished more in the past year than anyone thought possible. While associations are facing challenging times, ASCE is on the right track, doing the right things, and making a monumental difference in the world.

    Cons

Office shower facilities are adequate but could be larger.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course, persevere and continue to grow and improve, working together.

I have been working at Asce full-time

    Pros

Depending upon who you work for, you can come/go as you please.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't like each other so it makes it very hard to get anything done.

    Advice to Management

Hire some new people who don't have a hidden agenda.

I worked at Asce full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

ASCE is very flexible and most of the people are good and easy to work with.

    Cons

ASCE is top heavy and has little to no care for their low level employees. The Director/Manager to employee ratio is unheard of and their focus is not employee worth building, but lining the pockets of the executives and directors. The leadership in some of the departments is very poor. Years ago I would have recommended anyone to work there, but today, if I was in employee, I would campaign a walkout boycott.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention and praise your good employees. Really hone in and understand the assets the association holds within their employees. Remember your lower level employees have families, need to eat, and live. PAY THEM, RESPECT THEM.

I have been working at Asce full-time

    Pros

    1. Flexible scheduling (if you get the right boss)

    2. Work-life balance (if you get the right boss)

    3. Job Security - you basically have to break the law to get fired (and even then...)

    4. There are some genuinely nice people here if you get to know them.

    5. If you land in the right department, your boss will guide you for your career, not just at ASCE, but beyond.

    Cons

    1. Salary is abysmal, even compared to other non-profits. Raises are capped at 2%.

    2. No bonuses. Ever. (Unless you are one of the upper management's pets)

    3. Inequality between departments in terms of employee experience

    4. Vicious competition for resources, attention, approval

    5. Grudges between Senior Leadership makes change slow or ineffective to implement

    6. Unwillingness to face reality, ignoring staff and member feedback and continuing on the
same path, while still confused that nothing improves.

    7. Understaffed in some vital departments, overstaffed in others with people who should be retired, but instead get to keep collecting a paycheck for bringing in bagels.

    8. Silos, silos, silos. There is no overarching strategy, so it's each department for themselves, and no one knows where their role fits into the larger scheme of things.

    9. Total lack of priorities leads to always reacting, never being able to be proactive.

    10. Launched a campaign to improve the values, which has only made the environment worse, and has seen the biggest violators get rewarded with promotions.

    Advice to Management

    1. Clean house at the Senior Leadership level. Offer buyouts to, or fire, those ineffective Managing Directors and Directors who are just coasting to retirement. THEN, add some new blood to the SLT, people who don't bring baggage and stale "but we've always done it this way" perspectives.

    2. Live by the values you promote to staff.

    3. Replace your HR staff with people who AREN'T what the current staff is: unprofessional, disorganized, irresponsible with employee money (they frequently forget to make the retirement contributions), gossiping, vindictive, obnoxious, manipulative, self-serving, ineffective, and power-tripping.

    4. Overhaul or cut out the Conferences Department entirely. Stop ignoring the turnover and dysfunction. When staff flee like passengers from the Titanic, take a look at who's steering the ship into the iceberg.

    5. Look at your Continuing Education department - members hate it, staff hates it, but they keep getting to waste the organization's time and money.

    6. When you see a trend in exit interviews, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

    7. Hire a deputy director to oversee operations and enforce behavior rules. There are too many moving parts to just ignore and hope things get along. Especially when the Executive Director has no interest in staying informed or taking action.

    8. Stop letting bullies get away with gross misbehavior just because they bring in money or work on a high profile project.

    9. Stop letting volunteers run business decisions. There's a reason we are in the situation we're in.

    10. Start communicating with staff to improve morale, stop conducting business in the shadows.

    Pros

Great place to learn programs and management style, some extra training is offered if you speak up and ask for it, some positions give you opportunities to travel, lovely members.

    Cons

Needs some changes internally to keep up with the times and remain attractive to young people, tenured employees can get away with some negative behavior.

    Pros

Flexible schedule, not too much oversight so no issue if you come in late

    Cons

Some people take advantage of the lax management style. Not a place to grow your career

    Advice to Management

Reorganization is in order. Management is too top heavy. Way too many directors.

    Cons

Very tenured organization so upward mobility can be hard in some instances.

    Advice to Management

Flatten the org to the greatest extent possible. Remove the bad apples.
