I worked at Ascend Learning full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nice people. Very smart people. Lots of people who show up committed to their mission.

    Cons

Lots of favoritism. There are the values they say they have, and then there are the values that actually exist. Some pockets within the company actually do live the values but it's very erratic. It's also a very top heavy organization. Lots of titles are handed out, which creates power dynamics.

    Advice to Management

    Live the values.

I have been working at Ascend Learning full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Ascend has a great culture that is lived out-the values are believed, are real and they matter across all the businesses. But it is really the people who make the biggest difference in this company. The teamwork, the sharing of talents, the generosity and drive to make a difference are all a part of the human spirit that drives the businesses forward and makes this a really unique place to work.

    Cons

This is a high-growth, fast-paced place to work--with that comes some chaos at times, while change and evolution of systems, brands, processes all are pivoting and changing to align to the businesses needs.

    Advice to Management

Keep opening doors for growth and development of your people.

I worked at Ascend Learning full-time

      Pros

Great corporate culture and work life balance Good benefits and salary

      Cons

Disfunction at Ascend level of company. I worked at ExamFX business unit and loved the management at the business unit level, but holding company (Ascend) kept plugging in Ivy league managers from other business units. We had 4 different CEOs thrust upon us during my three year tenure. Each new CEO would engage in a 60 to 90 day top down analysis of the company and institute changes to rectify their perceptions of weakness...

I worked at Ascend Learning full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Unlimited PTO, decent benefits, great people

      Cons

Enjoying a bright career, I loved consulting with this company and eagerly awaited the perfect opportunity to join the team full time. While the work was hard and we often worked nights and weekends, I loved my teammates and stakeholders. I enjoyed great personal relationships with people in all departments. I came to trust a lot of folks and a lot of them trusted me, too. I made the huge mistake of outshining my...

Fire managers who seek to destroy other people. They can't possibly be good managers. This is a HUGE liability.

I worked at Ascend Learning full-time

      Pros

Great peers - Employees who work on products are hard-working, supportive, and positive. Upper managers, unfortunately, are out of touch. Flextime - If you have a good manager, you do get unlimited time off. The flexibility is great, especially for parents. If you have a bad manager, then they can make you feel guilty for requesting time off.

      Cons

Upper management is out of touch to the point of being damaging - Upper management is so removed from product-level work that they often make decisions that make it difficult to get work done. Unrealistic workload - The workload is extremely high and employees work overtime with no recognition, or they have to leave work undone and face negative repercussions from management. In particular, entry level positions designed...

      Advice to Management

Get in touch with employees at the product level. Listen to them and make realistic decisions based on their experiences, rather than making decisions in a bubble and blaming product-level employees when the decisions backfire. Take a serious look at the amount of stress employees are under. Fix it, or people are going to continue to leave or burnout.

I worked at Ascend Learning full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Flexible time off, competitive pay, annual bonus

      Cons

Cliques, politics, constant shifting of priorities and direction. Accountability is one of their values but there is no positive accountability and negative only applies to some.

      Advice to Management

You're burning out employees faster than you can onboard them. Soon there won't be any talent left willing to work with you.
