I have been working at Ascend Media full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Unlimited PTO, flexible schedule, hands-off approach from management allows for creative and individual "style' for day to day. Some of us have been here for years so is truly like working in a family environment

    Cons

Newbies have trouble fitting in/finding their path, healthcare is high, leadership was in turmoil but digging out slowly

I worked at Ascend Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working to produce publications for a a wide range of organizations - primarily associations in the medical industry - was interesting, as was doing the research and analysis.

    Cons

Chaotic management with no clear direction, and the big surprise of being expected to take a 10% pay cut right off the bat in order to be allowed to even accept the position.

I have been working at Ascend Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Unlimited PTO "as long as it does not interfere with projects." Coworkers are nice, fun, creative. Lots of free reign.

    Cons

The company is so short-staffed that ANY PTO affects company projects because everyone is working 2-3 people's jobs at once. There's lots of free reign because the senior management has no idea what you're doing, how to do it if you're not there, and they could care less about what you do as long as deadlines are met. Lots of turnover; management is secretive and does not offer much in the way of support. Wide discrepancy between management salaries and "peon" salaries.

I worked at Ascend Media full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Unlimited vacation. You don't have to accrue it. Take as much time off as your schedule allows. Also located in Overland Park near Leawood, so there are tons of restaurants and shopping around. Coworkers are awesome and all very helpful.

    Cons

Very short-staffed but all employees take on huge workloads. They implemented a company-wide pay cut two years ago in order to not have to lay anymore people off, then continued to do layoffs anyway. High turn-over. No long-term growth potential. Communication is lacking. Benefits are ok, but the company healthcare plan is expensive, and they've stopped matching 401(k)s and giving end-of-the-year cost-of-living raises. Because of that, they've also gotten rid of yearly reviews, so employees never really know how they're doing. Employee morale is low, and it seems senior management has given up on trying to improve that. The company used to hold fun summer and holiday events. Not anymore.

    Pros

Nice co-workers and good location. It's a job until the economy improves.

    Cons

Sweat shop mentality; inadequate compensation for excessive workload. Lack of appreciation for employees results in low morale and high turn-over. Lots of office politics.

"Potential, but the poor morale and overall corporate culture is killing them! Needs a management overhaul."

I have been working at Ascend Media

    Pros

The benefits package isn't ALL bad and is actually pretty comparable to what most companies offer. They used to pride themselves on offering team building and recognition activities for their employees, but that bottomed out once the layoffs began, divisions were being sold off, and department functions started shifting. So, there might still be a potential for that to change for the better one day.

    Cons

The morale and corporate culture are, by far, the downsides of working for this company. Among other things, as an employee you might experience FAVORITISM, an inappropriate reporting structure (people reporting to friends or others they have a relationship with outside of the company), a true lack of appreciation for employee contributions, poor communications between staff, a top [management] heavy structure, inconsistent salaries for similar positions and salaries not commensurate with experience/skills, little room for advancement and a company that seems to lack a strong sense of direction with regards to management and employee retention efforts. Turnover rate is VERY high as a result of unhappy employees and frequent layoffs.
