I have been working at Ascension Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

AIS gives me the opportunity to work with many great IT analysts and innovators. There is some flexibility that is very helpful and we are allowed to work from home a couple of times a week. Good team atmosphere.

    Cons

So many merges, re-structuring and leadership changes in the recent past. This has left a lot of questions regarding appropriate processes and who is managing what.

    Advice to Management

Listen to associate input and act on it. Be proactive with defining and communicating new processes. Always consider the big picture and downstream effects of so much change during a short period of time.

I worked at Ascension Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Enjoyed working with patients and their families
    Christian environment
Enjoyed working with surgery nurses and overflow area staff
    Good health insurance
Can use pharmacy in hospital for personal medications

    Cons

Needed some major improvements in the management all around.
Easily took advantage of employees who stepped up and did jobs beyond the pay grade and never fully compensated them for it when they said they would
It's a big facility so it is easy for your co-workers to hide so they wouldn't be in the unit when you got busy.
Nursing staff takes advantage of you to help them to tasks when it is really the nursing students job or CNA to help the nurses
Management always gripes about lack of supplies and then complains when you order enough supplies to stock the unit for a full week because it was "too much money."

    Advice to Management

Become more family oriented and treat the employees who aren't on the nursing staff with respect. Need better compensation and raises for all non-nursing staff. Felt all the attention goes to catering to the nurses but it takes a whole staff to make a hospital work

I have been working at Ascension Health part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay and hours. The company is faith based and gives room for advancement within the company. They have many other branches within other states if you are looking to transfer to another location. Raises are given and are competitive in pay for the market areas. They are up to date on advancements within the company. Overall great place to work.

    Cons

Vacation/ personal time slow to accrue, this may be a standard across the board for all healthcare today. Some management could be improved.

I have been working at Ascension Health part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Self scheduling. Managers are very flexible with scheduling and personal issues that may arise. Your peers are typically awesome team players.

    Cons

All ICU RN PRN employees are subject to float to any floor. Not a lot of education opportunities at your home hospital. Very confusing on which classes are consider mandatory annually and often times your notified at the last minute. You will be fired if the mandatory class or skills fair is not completed. With that said it makes it hard to plan any vacations and personal time off. Also for Saint Thomas Rutherford the cafeteria prices are ridiculous for employees. Actually, there is not a employee discount for food other than for salads and soups and that is only 10%.

    Advice to Management

See above in the cons section.

    Pros

Large Hospital, Stays up to date with technology

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Back up your staff employees. Directors & Managers have free reign. Some are very dishonest.

I have been working at Ascension Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They're working on raising wages to market levels. Good place to hone med surg skills

    Cons

Very understaffed all the time. Rarely have CNA help. Brutal working without help.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider the staffing grids. Consider voluntarily implementing similar staffing to legislated ratios from California and other similar states.

I worked at Ascension Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The faith based platform is well woven into their work, both in planning and in operations. I admire their social and just wage policies and was proud to work for them.

    Cons

Hard work is almost too valued. Its tough with such important work to unplug but necessary.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the burning "why", the vision, and you will have engaged associates.

I have been working at Ascension Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

5% matching for the retirement plan, plus a pension after 5 years, roughly 23 days vacation a year, including holidays, typical medical benefits, etc. Nice working environment, friendly co-workers, immediate management is responsive, yearly raises if you qualify.

    Cons

The raises are not guaranteed, and they tend to be very minimal even when you get them. There are limited opportunities for advancement. Ascension is selling/contracting their revenue cycle team out to a company called R1 in fall of 2017. At that time all of the benefits listed above will change. There will be no pension. In fact, it seems like all of the benefits will be reduced with the new company. Ascension has treated me well while I've been with them but I'm a small fish in a big pond. The end goal with Ascension seems to be money. They treat their employees well but that's not really their priority. At the end of the day as an employee I have a difficult time trusting the company.
