Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Toxic Culture

Oct 5, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in Bedford, MA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

There are some nice people working at Aspen Technology.

    Cons

Managers/supervisors blame HR for high staff turnover and for the company’s continued difficulty in hiring and retaining staff, but the management is archaic and toxic and this is the real problem. Micromanagers from other departments are allowed to stifle sales opportunities and those in high positions lack insight into fundamental technology and processes that this company needs to scale and remove very outdated practices. There is a saying that people should always assume positive intent, but at Aspen Technology it seems like management always assumes negative intent. There is an approach to people that is passive aggressive and hostile which makes life here hard. The pay at this company is not competitive with other local businesses. This makes it hard to justify staying and withstanding poor treatment when there are so many opportunities where culture and pay are substantially better. There is no work from home culture - this change is being pushed from the bottom up which is not how successful cultural changes occur. Throughout the pandemic the executives remained hunkered down in their wing of as if it was some great act of defiance and resistance while the rest of the staff worked from home. This alone spoke volumes of the outdated culture of management. There are diversity and inclusion initiatives, but they are insincere which was obvious when the women in leadership group’s claim to fame is their ability to provide cupcakes at staff events and host meetings to encourage women’s advancement while having the predominant speaker and representative of the group be a senior male staff member. It's also appears that the company is pushing fake reviews on GlassDoor to help hiring initiatives which is disheartening - there should be real change, not trying to put up a facade to pull the wool over candidate's eyes.

Extremely dated company with a talent deficiency

Nov 15, 2019 - Manager in Bedford, MA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Great products, market leader. - Good work/life balance - Some good benefits, some not so good.

    Cons

This company is managed and run like a company in the 1990's. Extremely bureaucratic, slow, governed processes, systems and tools. CEO and entire C-level team is very old school and uninspiring. Zero trust from upper leadership with there employees. No work from home and everything is on lock-down unless you get the appropriate permissions, which sometimes needs to come from CEO himself which is a red flag that he gets involved in such low level decisions. There is a severe lack of talent at AspenTech. They attract people later in their careers who are either set in their ways or lack the motivation to fight the uphill battles for change. The good workers usually come and go pretty quickly. To their credit they seem to recognize some of these flaws and are attempting to undergo a leadership transformation. Unfortunately for change to truly happen, it has to start at the top, and the CEO is too stubborn and old school to change at this point in his career.

    Pros

Good starting benefits and vacation (3 weeks)

    Cons

If you want a fun work opportunity with flex time, growth, and freedom to excel...continue your search. You will not get that here at Aspen. No flex time No availability to work from home No snow days (use vacation day if you didn't make it in with 2+ feet of snow...) Forget day appointments No perks in terms of that. Mandatory work hours makes it hard to enjoy coming to the office. 2 years at Aspen and not one growth opportunity so don't expect that. With micro managers don't expect to excel and grow on a personal career level. Company moral is almost non existent and I feel bad for HR as they are trying to increase it, however, I feel most employees could care less about it.

    AspenTech Response

    Talent Acquisition

I am sorry that you felt there was no growth opportunity in your role. We support career advancement through internal Career Development Workshops as well as outside resources, such as talks from career growth experts. We encourage all employees to take advantage of these resources and to discuss career goals with their managers to help identify opportunity for development. We continue to see a strong sense of employee pride displayed at many employee-led events, such as holiday parties, social outings and organized sporting events. We do recognize that as a modern software company there is a need to remain flexible and be understanding of our employee's personal commitments. This is why we continue to explore ways to implement practices that allow employees to comfortably tend to both personal and professional responsibilities.

    SLAVERY still exists...

    Pros

Would take me an era to think of it

    Cons

    1) Horrible Management 2) The smaller the team is the more miserable you would be. 3) Advice to foreign nationals: Never join this company. You will waste your crucial years in the hope that they would file the Green card. That would not happen or if that happens it would be in the 5th year of your permit. That time you would have no where to go and will be forced to stay with them. 4) Micro Management word itself will lose its meaning if used for this company. 5) Salary hikes are 3-4% which is around $50 on your paycheck every month..lol.. 6) Was sent for a week long training to the South. Took a cab to the Logan airport. They made a big deal out of it for taking a cab to the airport. 7) They call themselves a software company. 95% of the people dont have laptops and CANNOT work from home. 8) In 8 inches snow also, you are expected to report to work. Also they take attendance 2 times on the snow days. Running out of space...lol.... To be continued........................

Work here if you like frustration and stagnancy

Aug 19, 2021 - Executive in New Bedford, MA
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Core products are good. Acquisitions are unprofitable and bought on the cheap. The core technology and solutions are for the most part stable and valuable. There are some very smart and hardworking people here, who cannot make a decision because they are not allowed

    Cons

Soooo many issues... Note almost all positive reviews are short and not informative. HR asks employees to write them. Top down leadership stifles innovation and growth The process to implement any change will be studied, slowed, and if implemented ' watered down' No interest in feedback, data, or ideas if they don't match 1950's management style Customers are treated poorly in negotiations and contracts No work from home...why? Lack of trust with employees, management and customers It makes me sad a company like AspenTech exists in the tech world

    Good company with cons

Apr 26, 2023 - Technical Consultant in Reading, England
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

This is the lead software company in its field. There is a lot to learn from it and it's massively growing. It offers opportunities to travel and relocate as it's all over the world. They allow you to work from home as well.

    Cons

The annual pay rises are not usually fair, which leads to frequent turnover from the personnel and understaffed teams.

Great product but company is not flexible and pay raises never happen no matter how great you are at your job.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great products, they sell themselves. Great PTO and health insurance

    Cons

Promotions are impossible to come by and even if you do get one the salary increase is peanuts. No work from home policy even in the midst of a blizzard. No fun perks. Outdated culture.
