I have been working at Aspire Public Schools full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Great salary and benefits. There are lots of supports in place to help teachers. Teachers are there for the right reasons, to teach kids. Lots of opportunities to grow and move up.

    Cons

Lots of work outside of work! Too much planning is required. Not a good work-life balance. Students are very challenging.

I have been working at Aspire Public Schools full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Aspire has a "new age philosophy of discipline." There classroom layouts are not like most classrooms. They are more interactive. I would recommend parents to their Elementary Schools but never their Middle/High Schools.

    Cons

I sub for many school districts in LA County and other Charter schools. Aspire has this "new age philosophy of discipline" where there are no real consequences to students actions, because of this I have found it to be very difficult for me to maintain classroom management even in Elementary School. Long hours more than District Schools. Because most teachers are overworked there not as friendly as most District...

    Advice to Management

This "new age philosophy of discipline" doesn't work. I've been to middle school classes with two TA's in a classroom and students had no respect for the adults in the room. And this has happened more than once. I shouldn't have see a teacher having a difficult time with classroom management for a 3rd grade class. That is ridiculous. They are 3rd graders. When people go into a classroom staff members should introduce...

Former Employee - Teacher, Elementary School in South Gate, CA

I worked at Aspire Public Schools full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Great (and paid for) Professional Development opportunities. Classroom materials needed are always provided for the most part. Great, kind and passionate coworkers and colleagues.

    Cons

Teaching expectations are very rigid and inflexible. Very little to no room for teacher autonomy and teachers exploring their craft. Difficult work/life balance (working evenings, and weekends because the workload does not get finished compared to what I hear from teachers at other district jobs). Constant changing of curriculum (every year there is new adopted curriculum) making it difficult for teachers (and students)...

I worked at Aspire Public Schools full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Great kids and some dedicated staff

    Cons

    - Constant message of teacher-as-problem. At first it means you are special, OTHER teachers are the problem. We are the glorius, sanctified solution. Until the low data comes in or parents threaten lawsuits. Then you are the problem and all the righteous sanctimony is turned on you. -Psychologically unhealthy management style. Ever wished to have the person evaluating you and determining your salary would say they...

    Advice to Management

Be honest and transparent. With yourselves, staff and families. As long as you are paternalistic and opaque you won't close the achievement gap. You just perpetuate educational dysfunction.

I worked at Aspire Public Schools part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Higher pay, clean buildings-

    Cons

Terrible place-every administrator looking to get you in trouble and fire you.

    Advice to Management

Realize these are NOT Ph.d's at MIT.
